Announcements

Hi  Roome 29 Parents:
As you know there will be an indoor yard sale this Friday afternoon in the Neighborhood classrooms.  Students can now bring in anything they would like to donate to sell.  We also would like to have two parent volunteers to help.  Let me know if you are interested.

Also, as a class we are still trying to figure out if  there is enough interest to purchase anoeles as our class pet.  I have kept them before in the classroom.  Once outfitted they do not require much but their food which is a bag of very small crickets once every two weeks.  We of course then have to maintain a habitat for the crickets, mthe crickets also if there are not given as food right away will require food (very small meal worms).  At the class meeting we figured out the initial costs and came up with 2.00 per student.  I don't expect everybody to want to take these creatures home, but will need someone for the summer.  Think about it.  It's too bad we couldn't have a guinea pig!!!
Let me know what you think.
Andy

Our Neighborhood Yard Sale takes place Friday, December 11th.   Students who have items to donate bring these items in by Thursday, December 10th.  Items will be priced anywhere between $0.25 and $3.00.  Students will be given time to shop on Friday afternoon.
All proceeds will be going to a children's charity.  Teachers are currently considering a number of options.

A New Lunch System
Students will be using their student ID number when buying lunch.
For those who prepay lunch, this will act like a debit card.  Mrs. Argir sent an email concerning this matter.
Let me know if you did not receive this email.

Key People of the Sixties

Introduction

"The early 1960s in America were a time of hope, energy, and prosperity, a time when the United States settled confidently into its role as a superpower possessed of military might and financial clout. "It is a time for a new generation of leadership, to cope with new problems and new opportunities," the new president John F. Kennedy told the nation in 1960. 'For there is a new world to be won.' "

"Much of the optimism had gone out of American life by the end of the 1960s; it was replaced with grief, cynicism, and fear. John F. Kennedy, the president who had for many symbolized hope of America; Martin Luther King, Jr., the Nobel Prize-winning leader who had promoted nonviolence to redress social injustice; Malcolm X, the forceful advocate of black pride; and Robert Kennedy, the presidential candidate who promised peace and order, were all assassinated."

"It was a time when American maturity was tested and American capacity was demonstrated."

 Hello Volunteers.
Parents going on the bus will need to arrive at school by 8:10 at the latest!!
See you tomorrow.  we are so lucky to have such fantastic weather.
Andy

Hello again..

Chaperones who are driving should meet us at the Visitor Center.  We will be there between 9:45 and 10:00.  Students may only eat lunch outside of the museum...there is a picnic pavilion next to the bus parking lot, so my suggestion is that we get groups back to that area at 12:15, eat, and get on the bus :)

Again, I will print out a schedule for all chaperones and give to you to hand out in the morning.

                     Mrs. Slote’s School Supply List

I'm sure you have been wondering what do I need to bring to school on the first day.  The only supplies you will need on the first day is a pencil and a black and white composition book.  Below is a list of supplies you can purchase at your convenience.  Building 19 has binders for 1.48.  These will be used for portfolios.  Each third grade student needs to purchase one.
Here is the supply list:
1 black and white composition notebook ( I like these because the pages don't fall out.)
1 package pencils ( to be placed in supply closet)
1 package magic markers
1 package of three glue sticks (placed in supply closet)
1 ream of copy paper
1 pocket folder (Science)  also a thermometer if possible for our weather unit
1 box of tissues
1 1/2 inch binder
1 hand sanitizer (8oz.)
Thank you for your help with supplies.  Building 19 is my favorite place in the world and the family store in White Plains , New York where I picked up many supplies for the classroom at unbelievable prices.
Ashland parents have been wonderful in their support of teachers.  I feel priviledged to work in the Ashland Public Schools.  Looking forward to exciting year ahead!

I hope you have all enjoyed a restful and fun-filled summer.  I will be in school the Wed, Thurs., and Friday the week before school starts, if any student would like to visit or help set up the room.

I can't wait to meet the new third graders, and see my old second and third year friends!
Your teacher,

Mrs. Slote

Hello to all room 29ers
Due to budget constraints we will be down one Neighborhood classroom.  This is very sad news and some of your children who have had Ms. Ballou for blocks may be a little upset.  It is hard for children to understand why these cuts  have to be made, and   I just wanted to alert you so you can be ready to answer some of their questions.  We feel very sad to have to lose one of our colleagues.  Ms. Ballou has been reassigned to a traditional fourth grade.  Needless to say there is a big hole in all of our hearts.
Hoping for sun.
Have a great weekend!
Andy

Hello All,

As I'm sure many of you know, due to budget constraints, many class sizes at the Mindess School are increasing. Due to these changes, as announced, we are decreasing the size of the Neighborhood by one classroom. It is with a very heavy heart that I have to announce that that classroom is ours, as I have been reassigned to the traditional 4th grade.

I cannot yet, unfortunately, answer the obvious and I'm sure immediate question of where, exactly, your children will be going. They will, of course, remain in the Neighborhood and will be integrated into one of the remaining seven classrooms. Your children will be in the caring, wonderful, creative, and beyond capable hands of my Neighborhood colleagues. Hopefully, this is a temporary reassignment; with any luck, the number of incoming third graders will be up the following year and an eighth teacher will be needed again!

I shared this news with the kids today, and although it was a rough day I think we are ready to look on the bright side of things, embrace this change, and enjoy and make the most of our time left in the year together. It has been a pleasure, an honor, and an invaluable learning experience to spend the last year or two working with all of you and I cannot express how lucky I feel and grateful I am.

I'm sure you have further questions and/or concerns and you are more than welcome to direct these to me or to Mrs. Argir, as you feel is appropriate. I will do my best to answer them.

Have a fantastic weekend and take care.

Mindess Schoolyard Garden...needs your help!

The Neighborhood students are starting a garden that will eventually be used by the whole school community.  The purpose will be to grow organic vegetables which will be donated to local food pantries.  The garden will also provide a hands-on learning experience for all students at Mindess. To get our project started we need volunteers!

*  June 9th  and 10th  at 1:45- Please come with tools to help us remove grass and turn over the dirt.  We will meet outside at the garden site (front lawn).

* Donations- we will need donations of compost, mulch, tools, stakes, fencing, seeds, seedlings and time.

Please email Kiera Smith at ksmith@ashland.k12.ma.us if you are interested in donating an item or volunteering your time.

Thanks in advance for helping to make our school even better!

Dear Parents,

As a part of the Neighborhood's partnership with USARIEM (United States Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine) in Natick, MA, the students will be participating in a fitness test sometime in the next week. We are working with the scientists and the students to do a long-term study of student fitness, comparing growth from grades 3-5, looking at heart rate, blood pressure, and times on the pacer test done with Mrs. Crawford and Mr. Powers. All the data is anonymous and only used to demonstrate to the students the correlations between fitness and physiological systems. This is a wonderful experience in showing the connections of science in the real world, too. We feel very lucky to have this partnership with the soldiers and scientists at USARIEM.
