Who was Charles S. Ashley?
Charles Sumner Ashley was mayor of New Bedford for 32 years over a period of
45 years. He was born on September 5, 1858 and died on February 6, 1941.
As
mayor, he presided over the large scale building of streets, sewers, roads,
schools, parks, and a municipal equipment department. New Bedford's entire
system of parks, except for the old Common, came about during his years as
mayor. He fought for a new Fairhaven Bridge. He widened Acushnet Ave.,
north of Sawyer St., widened Union St. and Pleasant St. and of course, laid
out Ashley Blvd. His obituary described his mayoral career as "record
without parallel in any community of this size in the United States." He was
also known as "the builder" of New Bedford.
