Information and Policies

Goals
The main goal in this Math class is for you to UNDERSTAND the math topics we study, rather than just
memorize procedures. Sometimes you will use physical objects to help you see why certain rules and
procedures work the way they do. You will keep a Math Notebook in which you paste handouts that
summarize the concepts and procedures taught in class. In this notebook you will also record YOUR
OWN IDEAS about how to understand and remember these concepts. Your Math Notebook will also help
you as you study for tests and quizzes. You will work in groups to solve and discuss math problems
and you will write about your problem-solving strategies to help you prepare for the open-response
sections of the Math MCAS.

Class Preparation and Supplies
Each day you must bring to class the following materials: your agenda book, your spiral bound
notebook used only for Math notes, 2 pencils, a pencil sharpener, an eraser, a black dry erase marker,
and a glue stick.
Class preparation is graded. You begin each term with a class preparation grade of 100, but you lose 2
points for any day you do not have ALL the required materials.

Homework
You will have homework in Math almost every night. The homework is usually problems assigned from
the text so you can practice what was learned in class that day. Homework counts for 25% of your term
grade, so completing homework every day is a good way to help your grade!
Homework is graded for effort and completeness, WHICH INCLUDES SHOWING ALL WORK. You begin
each term with a homework grade of 100, but you LOSE 5 POINTS for any day you do not have a
complete homework assignment. (If you cannot do any part of your homework due to illness,
emergencies, or confusion, you will need a note from a parent in order to avoid losing the 5 points for
that day.)

Tests and Grades
You will write test and quiz dates in advance in your agenda book so you can begin to review and study
at least 3 or 4 days before the day of the test.
Term grades are based on quizzes (30%) and tests (40%), homework completeness (25%), and class
preparation (5%).

THERE IS NO EXTRA CREDIT, so you should seek extra help during Advisory if you feel you are not
understanding the material. You may also use the Advisory Period make up problems similar to the
ones you got wrong on a test or quiz, but you will only earn back 1/2 of the original points for each
problem that was wrong on the original test. It is always better to be well prepared for the original test!
All make-ups must be completed WITHIN TWO WEEKS of receiving back a quiz or test.
