Grading Philosophy

Grading Philosophy

Homework (20%):
Journal Entries 3 times a week. I will write back to each student every
other week.
Students will be graded based on completion.
*Grades will be posted on Power School weekly (the best a student can get is
a 3/3)
The topic of the journal entry will change each term:
Term 1: Responsive
Term 2: Responsive/Inquisitive
Term 3: Evaluative
Term 4: Creative
Homework may also include working on drafts of writing as well. Grades will
also be based on completion only. These drafts will be submitted by DROPBOX
or Google Documents, depending upon computer access student's have at home.

Each student will begin the year with a 100 for a homework grade. Any
assignment that is not completed AND turned in by the due date will have 5
points deducted from the final homework grade. GET YOUR WORK DONE!

Participation (20%):
Students will be graded on participation daily. The grades will be posted
weekly.
Students can get up to 3 points a day based on their ability to volunteer,
work with peers, and complete assignments independently with integrity.
The best a student can get as a grade on Power School is 15/15 for the week.
*If a student is absent then that day will not count and they will not have
to make it up.

Some communication
strategies students can use in class to learn effectively with themselves and
their peers include:
-Thinking Aloud
-Self-questioning
-Proving their Answers
-Oral Responses
-Written Responses
-Problem Solving Independently
Problem Solving Within a Group
*These strategies will be slowly introduced, and students will grade
themselves on them. Teacher will give students a final grade based on the
students' continual input and self-grading procedure.

Quizzes (40%):
Quizzes will occur in a variety of formats. In order to assess everyone's
learning styles equally these formats include:

-Oral Assessments
-Exit Tickets (reflecting on what was learned that day)
-Written Assessments
-Group Activities
-Partner Assessments
-Whole Class Assessments (students will participate individually but the quiz
will be conducted to the entire class)

Projects (20%):
First term students will be graded on their Biographical Sketches for the
Gallery Gallivant. Students will be graded weekly out of 10 possible points
for each sketch. If a student is the student of the week they will be graded
on the items they brought in, and their explanation for each artifact they
chose to represent themselves.
*If students do not get to read their sketches aloud, then the teacher will
collect them and give them a grade based on what they wrote. Those who do
read it out loud will get a grade right after they read it.
*Some projects will be out of 100 points, depending upon the preparations and
time needed to complete the final draft/product. Rubrics for each project
will always be posted under class documents for students to refer to when
working on a project from home.
