FIRST Lego League

FLL ROBOTICS PROGRAM UPDATE
12-7-07

There’s GOOD NEWS and BAD NEWS…
Everyone always wants the BAD first! When I met with the Teams after school
on Tuesday, November 27, I let them know that we did not make it as one of
the first 48 Teams to register for Robonautica (WPI – Dec 15). As a matter
of fact, we are not amongst the top 15 on the “Ready Reserve” (Waiting List).
Very disappointing! And to think I submitted our information within the
first two days of acceptable registration! That’s how popular this
tournament has become! Next year I’ll register early in September!
Therefore with the “busy-ness” of December, we’ve decided to regroup after
the Winter Break and decide who is willing to continue into the winter-spring
(possibly be ready for a tournament in late April or early May)…or maybe even
host a Lego Jamboree Night with Princeton (see the article in the Landmark 12-
6-07). There will be no more meetings during December. My current idea is
to meet every three weeks (alternating an after school with a weeknight
session). Please let me know if you can still commit to supervising a team.
If there are not enough adults, I will only be able to continue with the two
eighth grade teams.

If anyone wishes to still attend Robonautica as a spectator (get ideas),
please let me know by Wednesday, December 12. There were several parents
willing to carpool to the WPI campus. It is an all-day event. The best time
to watch is after lunch! I’ll already be in Worcester that morning so I can
meet anyone there and transport students back to Rutland.
Please confirm your email address ASAP! Thank you and Happy Holidays!

      ---------------------------------------------------------

11/28/07 ANNOUNCEMENT: Saturday 12/1 meeting has been CANCELLED!! An
announcement was made in school 11/30. We Have been "Wait-Listed" for
Robonautica (WPI Tournament). We will check in next week during advisory
times to discus a "PLAN B!" We will be cancelling a few sessions for
December since so many conflicts have come up. We will probably continue
the Program into the spring for those who are interested. I am still in
need of adult supervisors when more than 2 teams are scheduled to meet! If
there is not adequate supervision, a session will need to be
cancelled/rescheduled. Thank you.

Also note...A phone tree should have come home with your student before
Thanksgiving Recess.
There are still quite a few parents who gave me email addresses (for
contacts) so I can send out group announcements via that method, however,
quite a few have "bounced back" as UNDELIVERABLE! Please add my address to
your list of "acceptable" recipients! I will always fill in the
Subject/Message field with something related to FLL. Thank you!

*Indicates a parent/guardian who is willing to serve as a supervisor (or
share the responsibility). Just a reminder: You need NO prior experience in
robotics, programming, or technology – just be able to offer positive energy!

All team meetings will be held in the CTMS Library unless
permission is sought through Mrs. Wood to bring the robot(s) and other
hardware to an alternate location. Attendance is crucial for team success.
You may not miss more than three meetings and still be considered a member
of the team! Good academic standing is also mandatory for all TEAM-related
activities (District policy). SCHOOL COMES FIRST! If you are not passing
all of your classes, you will be asked to postpone your participation in the
Robotics Program until you are able to maintain passing status!
