HOMEWORK

Homework will go home each night (Monday-Thursday) in your child’s
M.O.N.K.E.Y. Binder. All work is due the next morning. It is very important
to look over your child’s homework with him/her so that you both make sure
their best effort was put forth. Please initial the corner of their homework
each night.

POSITIVE BEHAVIOR

Positive behavior is ALWAYS rewarded in our class.

Have you seen Callie Caterpillar?

She is a friend of ours that learned that she could do anything if she just
put her mind to it. This year Callie Caterpillar is going to be on the
lookout for children who are putting their minds to following the
classroom/school rules and doing their best. Callie Caterpillar sits all day
in class and looks for children who are just like her. Callie Caterpillar
will grow each time a student and/or the entire class receives a compliment
for their positive behavior. Each time Callie reaches the end of a wall, we
earn a fun day (yet academic). Example: Pajama day, Crazy Hat day, etc..
Please make sure to stop by the classroom during the year to see how big
Callie Caterpillar has grown.

CLASSROOM DISCIPLINE

In my classroom, the students “Go for the Green!!” The students start each
day with a green light. The green light will remain as long as the student
follows all classroom/school rules and shows positive behavior. If a
situation arises and a student is not following the classroom or school
rules a warning, yellow light or red light is given. A yellow light is given
only after the student has been verbally warned about not following our
classroom or school rules. A yellow light means “Caution. Rethink your
Actions!” No consequence is given out for the yellow light. If you child
continues the negative behavior then a red light will be given. The red
light means “STOP!” When the red light is handed out the student will miss
five minutes of recess to think about their actions. After the time is up,
the child and I will have a conversation about what happened. If the
negative behavior is corrected and the student begins to follow the rules
correctly, then the student can earn a yellow light or even a green light.
If a student continues with his/her negative behavior than a double red
light is given. When a double red is given several things happen. The child
and I talk about all of the things that went wrong. The student then fills
out a “Double Red Light Alert” sheet and takes it upstairs to talk it over
with Mrs. Hedin. After the student talks with Mrs. Hedin, the student will
miss an entire recess so they can think about having a great rest of the
day. At the end of the day, I will come outside and speak with you or call
your home to talk about the situation. The “Double Red Light Alert” paper is
sent home to be signed and returned to school. At the end of each week, I
will send home a Behavior Report in your child’s
M.O.N.K.E.Y. binder for you to review. Please sign their Behavior Log before
removing the report from the binder. Thank you

SECOND GRADE GRADING

Our grades this year are mostly number grades. Students will receive
a 95%, 76%, 80%, etc. on all papers that were completed by themselves and
put in my grade book for report cards. On your child’s report cards all
number grades will then be turned into A, B, C, and D.
Grades for behavior, handwriting, conduct, etc. will still be graded
on an E, S+, S, S-, N, I, and U.
Work that comes home with a is usually work that has been
done together as a whole class. Homework will come home with a	, , or
. A check plus means that all of the homework was done correctly. A
check means that a couple of items were incorrect. A check minus means that
sections of the homework may be missing or several answers was incorrect. If
your child receives a check minus, they can fix the mistakes at home and
return it the next day for a check.

VOLUNTEERS:

**You must have a CORI check to help out in the school. Please let me know
if you need a form.

*Reading Helper:
I am looking for a parent or family member to come in and read a
story to the students from 2:15-2:30pm. I can provide a book for you to read
or you can bring one in from home. Reading helpers can come in every week or
once a month. If you have a younger child at home, I do not mind if you
bring them along to listen to the story.
*Classroom Helpers:
If you would like to help out in our classroom, I am looking for two
volunteers.
*Book Orders:
If you would like to help out, but do not have much time to come in
to school….this is the perfect job for you! Every month, I will send home
book order forms from Scholastic. As a book order helper, I will send you
our class orders and book order money. Once at home all you have to do is
call in the order to Scholastic and mail in the payment.
*Computer Lab: Every Monday 1:30-2:30pm

*******Just send in a note or email me to let me know if you are interested
in one of our Helper jobs. Thank you

BIRTHDAYS

Families can bring in pencils or goodie bags with mini toys instead of a
snack. I also encourage parents to come in and share a story with us or help
us create a project on their child’s special day.
*Please only send in Birthday invitations to school, if you have one for
every student in the class. Thank you
Going Bonkers over Birthdays:
This year we are going to have a Birthday Book Swap to help celebrate each
student’s birthday. The Birthday Book Swap is a great way for students to
get excited about reading. To get the swap started, we need each student to
bring in a book that they have enjoyed reading. This book can be gently used
or new. When it is your child’s birthday, s/he will pick a book from the
book swap collection as a present from our class. Summer birthdays can be
celebrated as a half birthday or in June.

HOLIDAY HELPERS

Each holiday that we celebrate is listed below. The children are divided up
by holiday so we don’t get overloaded with goodies. If you and your child
can prepare a holiday snack for the holiday listed below it would be
wonderful. If you cannot provide the class with an item during your holiday,
just let me know. It is not a problem! I will remind you of your item as
each holiday arrives. Please keep this in you M.O.N.K.E.Y. binder. Thanks
