Volunteers

Cole School Library had 45 volunteers for the 2007-2008 school year and 52
last year!  With our library assistant, 
Deb Moore, working a half time schedule, our volunteers are especially needed.

We recruit new volunteers at the beginning of each school year.  Look for the
volunteer sign-up 
sheet at the upcoming Open Houses.  We also welcome new volunteers as needed,
especially for 
events like our annual Book Fair which happens in December.

Weekly Library Volunteer Tasks

• Re-shelve returned books from cart.
• Assist students in finding books.
• Straighten the shelves.
• Assist students in cleaning up.
• Shelf read your “adopted” section.

Special/Other Library Volunteer Tasks

• Read aloud to students.
• Check books in and out/prepare overdue notices in Deb Moore’s absence.
• Mend damaged books.
• Assist students in research work.  (Grades MA and 2)
• Prepare materials for special projects.
• Assist with book fairs. 
• Assist in the inventory process. 
• Assist in new book processing (covering, labeling, stamping).
• Assist with special projects e.g. Book Club.

Volunteer responsibilities:

• Sign in upon entering the building and wear a visitors badge
• Complete a CORI check
• Read the Volunteer Handbook
• Read and sign a Confidentiality form.

• We appreciate that on occasion other opportunities and obligations could
necessitate your being 
unable to keep your commitment to the library.  If you cannot make your
scheduled library time for 
any reason, please contact the library coordinator, Carolyn Miller, 978-887-0151

Many classes will have more than one volunteer, in which case these volunteers
may prefer to obtain 
each other’s contact information and make alternate arrangements among
themselves.  We ask that 
any permanent changes to the volunteer schedule be communicated to Carolyn so
that our Master 
Schedule remains up-to-date.

• You should plan to arrive 5-10 minutes prior to your scheduled time and stay
5 to 10 minutes after 
your scheduled time in order facilitate effective communication with us and
with the incoming 
volunteer.

• Recognize that being a volunteer means being committed and willing to help
each child in the class 
equally.   If your child becomes especially distracted by your presence in a
way that negatively affects 
the learning experience of other children, we will need to discuss the issue
and decide on an 
appropriate solution.

It is our goal to have our library volunteers feel well instructed and guided
in their tasks, and 
matched with assignments that appeal to them.  We welcome any additional
special contributions 
that you may like to suggest and to make.  We want to avoid “burn out” and for
you to feel that 
volunteering in the library is a rewarding, worthwhile and enjoyable experience.
