HOW THE MASSACHUSETTS CHILDREN'S BOOK AWARD (MCBA) PROGRAM WORKS DURING THE SCHOOL YEAR: Fourth and fifth graders who read five books from the current year's list will vote in February for their favorite book. Students from all over Massachusetts participate in the voting to select the most popular middle-grade children's book in Massachusetts. Think "American Idol" for books! Students who read a total of twelve books from any of the previous MCBA lists are invited to attend a fun party in the spring. After reading a book, students must fill in a short form available in the school library. If the librarian or classroom teacher reads an MCBA book to the class, students can get "credit" for that book if they fill out the form. 2010~2011 MCBA WINNERS ANNOUNCED! Children of Massachusetts have selected 11 Birthdays by Wendy Mass as the best book of the year! Honor books are: No Talking by Andrew Clements, Savvy by Ingrid Law, The Magic Half by Annie Barrows, and The Other Side of the Island by Allegra Goodman HERE'S WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING ABOUT THE 2010~2011 BOOKS: 11 BIRTHDAYS: "I like this book because it has a lot of rich language plus it reminds me of my cousin because she is eleven and her name is Amanda like in the book." ~Jamila T. "I really liked the book because it was twisted realistic fiction. Leo and Amanda are perfect friends. I wish they realized it sooner. If I were Amanda I would freak out! I liked the book because it was so magical." ~Allison B. NO TALKING: "I liked the book because it was a connection to me because I like to play the game "quiet game." I read it in fourth grade and it was so funny." ~Marissa L. NOTE: The MCBA program is sponsored by Salem State University and has been running since 1975.
