What a fun and magical time of year! We continue to focus on the alphabet and letter sounds along with constantly reviewing our "popcorn" words. We're also learning about winter and the various holidays celebrated around the world. In math the focus is on measurement, patterns, counting and number recognition and writing.

Parents often ask, "What can we do at home to help our kindergartener?" The answer is READ, READ, READ! This is a wondrful way to spend quality time together along with strengthening their reading skills and building vocabulary. Don't forget to include the take-home books in the rotation. Rereading them regularly builds confidence as well as instant recognition of high frequency words.

We're doing a lot more writing in our class. As the students orally share intersting stories they are learning to illustrate and record them in their Writing and Drawing Books. We have coined the term "kid spelling" to refer to words the children spell phonetically. At this point we are more concerned with the process rather than the product, so please don't be concerned if you see papers coming home with misspellings.

Although the children stay in for recess during inclement and extreme weather, we do try to get outside as often as possible. Please make sure your child has gloves/mittens and a warm winter winter coat.
