Welcome to a new week of learning!

Progress Reports are being sent home on Wednesday, 10/8. Please sign and
return your child's report as soon as possible.

Scholastic Book order forms are being sent home this week. Orders are due
this Friday, October 10th.

There will be no school next Monday, October 13th, as we observe Columbus
Day.

Congratulations to Dan K. and Carly S., grade four Citizens of the Month for
September! These students always set a fine example for others to follow.

Mrs. Lynch has named Vincent G. and Daniel M. as Players of the
Month for September. Well done, boys!

Here are some highlights of what we will be studying this week:

SPELLING:
Our spelling list is made up of words related to health.
The test will be held on Thursday morning.

LANGUAGE ARTS:
Our weekly anthology story is "Open Wide, Don't Bite," a nonfiction
selection about Dr. Peter Kertesz, a dentist who treats both human and
animal patients.

In writing, we are focusing on identifying relevant and irrelevant details
within paragraphs.

This week we are beginning our second read-aloud selection of the year: The
Tale of Despereaux, by Kate DiCamillo.

MATH:
We are estimating sums and differences, focusing on front-end estimation.
We will determine if our estimations are over-estimated or under-estimated.
We will be adding whole numbers and money. On Friday, 10/10, there will be
a quiz on Chapter 2, Section A.

SCIENCE:
We are going to complete Lesson 3, "How do Flowers Make Seeds and Fruits?".
Students will learn about the importance of pollinators, and how they are a
vital part of our ecosystem.

SOCIAL STUDIES:
We are continuing to learn about the Northeast Region of the United States.
This week our focus will be on transportation and growth in the early days
of the republic. Our studies will include learning about the many waterways
in the region, and the construction of the Erie Canal.
