Look What We’ve Been Learning

Readers’ Workshop:We have been learning about Making Inferences during Readers' Workshop. We have learned about using our background knowledge (schema) and clues from the text to help us answer our questions. We will be moving on to an Author Study soon!
Writers’ Workshop: We have been learning about editing our work during Writing time. Ask your child about giving their writing a "High Five". We are checking our work for the following FIVE important things:
#1. uppercase letters where needed (including names and I),
#2. proper Stop Signs (punctuation),
#3. proper Spacing between words,
#4. Tapping & Blending our words (making sure we write all the sounds we hear) and spelling TRICK words correctly,
#5 Reading our story to make sure it makes sense!
Math: We are learning about patterns on number grids and using that knowledge to solve number-grid puzzles. We are also beginning to explore fractional parts of wholes and comparing equivalent fractions. We have recently added the dollar bill to our money collection and the children are enjoying counting up greater amounts of money!
Science: The first grade has just received fifteen chicken eggs that will be hatching at the end of this month! The children are SO excited and we will be learning all about Life Cycles while we await our little chicks!

What "Bugs" us about Spring: Spring has arrived and so have the bugs! We have been dealing with the pesky May flies recently and will soon be battling the mosquitoes and ticks. I realize there is little we can do to prevent these nuisances, but I would suggest that some sort of bug repellent be applied to your child before school to minimize the bug bites. Please keep this in mind especially on GYM days!
As always, please contact me if you have any questions or concerns.
Thank you for your continued support at home!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Leroy
