Reading Log
All students should read at least 15 minutes every night. This might include independent reading, reading aloud, or being read to by an adult. Students will keep track of their reading Monday through Thursday on their Reading Log. They should record the title of the book, the author, the number of minutes read, and how much of the book read. If a student reads more than one book during the 15 minute period, they need only record one of the books they read. Reading Logs need to be handed in on Fridays.
Word Study
Each week students work with a set of words both in the classroom and at home. These words will focus on particular sounds (i.e. long and short "a" sounds), suffixes, or other spelling patterns. Students practice these words by doing a variety of sorting exercises. Your child will bring home an envelope on Mondays with his/her words. Each night there is a homework assignment with these words. The homework directions can be found on the envelope, as well as below. Please initial the Word Study Homework sheet each night to confirm that your child completed his/her practice. The empty envelope and the Parent Initial Sheet need to come back to school on Fridays.
Monday Homework
Cut your words out. Find the guide words in bold. Sort your words just as you did in class. Remember to say the word as you put it in the correct column. Sort the words a second time as fast as possible.
Tuesday Homework
Do a "No-Peek" Listening Sort at home with a partner. Have your partner read you each word. Listen and point to the guide word with the sound you just heard.
Wednesday Homework
Write the guide words at the top of the page. Go on a word hunt and find at least 5 words that are further examples of the sound or pattern you are studying. Do not add any oddball words.
Thursday Homework
Practice the spelling of the words so you’re ready for your Check Up on Friday.
