Weekly Homework

**Reading Log
-->All students should be reading at least 15 minutes EVERY night. This might include
independent reading, reading aloud or being read to by an adult. In addition, students
should fill in their reading log each night indicating the title of the book, the number of
minutes he/she reads, and the book's genre. I expect students to spell titles correctly and use
capital letters. In addition, students will have some type of written reading response on the
back that can be completed throughout the week. Students will keep track of their reading
Monday through Thursday and hand in their reading log on Fridays.

**Spelling practice
-->Each week, students will have a quiz on words with which they have worked. These words will
focus on particular sounds (long and short "a" sound), suffixes, or other patterns depending
on the spelling group to which your child belongs. They will practice these words by doing a
variety of sorting exercises in class, as well as at home. Your child will bring home an envelope
Tuesday with his/her words. Each night there is a homework assignment with these words.
Below are the homework directions that can be found on the envelope. Please make sure the
empty envelope comes back to school on Friday and that your child is ready for the quiz.

Tuesday Homework
Cut your words out and sort them just as you did in class. You may do this with a partner or you
may do this alone. Please explain the categories to an adult so that he/she can check your finished
sort.

Wednesday Homework
Sort your words at home just as you did in class. Next, choose 10 words and write a sentence for
each word. ALL SPELLING WORDS SHOULD BE SPELLED CORRECTLY AND UNDERLINED. Bring these
sentences to school the next day.

Thursday Homework
Do a blind sort at home with a partner. Next, go on a word hunt and find at least 5 words total
that fit into your categories. Do not add any oddball words. Lastly, practice the spelling of the words
so you’re ready for your Friday quiz. BRING THIS EMPTY ENVELOPE BACK TO SCHOOL FRIDAY.
