The following are the outlines of the Health topics we plan to cover this year in the elementary grades. Please note that the order of the unit topics may change in order to coordinate with enrichment activities that occur throughout the year. Grades K-3
Grades 4 & 5 · Personal health–skin care and hygiene, dental hygiene, hand washing to prevent illness · Social/Emotional Health–character traits, respect & responsibility, empathy, conflict resolution · Injury Prevention–fire safety, bike safety, universal precautions · Nutrition–food pyramid, healthy snacks, advertising and food choices · The Body Systems–circulatory, respiratory, digestive, muscular, skeletal. · Physical Activity–benefits, flexibility and fitness, warm-up/cool down, safety · Tobacco–what’s in tobacco smoke, tobacco and health, who influences you? In addition to the above, 4th & 5th graders will be introduced to the specifics of the National Health Education Standards. A list of the Standards is included below and more information is available on Miss Richards’ web site. Assessment Students in Grades 1-4 will be scored using the following categories: · Beginning (1); Developing (2); Meeting expectations (3); or Exceeds expectations (4) Assessment Students in the 5th grade will receive letter grades and will be assessed on: · Projects & Presentations (100 points) · In-class Activities and Assignments (25-50 points) · Posters & Paragraphs (50 points) · Homework (20-25 points) · Group Activity Work (10-20 points) Expectations It is expected that students will come to class prepared to learn and actively participate.
