General Information

·         Health classes meet once in the six day cycle. 

·         Classroom instruction will be differentiated in order to meet the individual learning styles of all students.

Topics

          The following are the outlines of the Health topics we plan to cover this year in the elementary grades.  Please note that the order of the unit topics may change in order to coordinate with enrichment activities that occur throughout the year.

 

Grades K- 3

  • Social/Emotional Health – managing bullies, role models, feelings, friends, cooperation
  • Injury Prevention – community helpers, bike safety, fire safety, Halloween safety, sun safety
  • Nutrition – food pyramid, portion sizes, vitamins & minerals, nutrition labels,            fast food (3rd Grade)     
  • Personal Health – taking care of our teeth, hand washing/germs, muscles & bones, five senses, organs & circulatory system
  • Physical Activity – why activity is good for me
  • Tobacco and Addictive Substances – what is tobacco, how addictive substances affect your body
  • Medicines – safe use of medicines, you can’t tell by looking (K)
  • Environmental Health (time permitting) 

 

Grades 4 & 5

·         Personal health – skin care and hygiene, dental hygiene, hand washing to prevent illness

·         Social/Emotional Health – character traits, respect & responsibility, empathy, conflict resolution

·         Injury Prevention – fire safety, bike safety, universal precautions

·         Nutrition – food pyramid, healthy snacks, advertising and food choices

·         The Body Systems – circulatory, respiratory, digestive, cardiovascular, muscular, skeletal.

·         Physical Activity – benefits, flexibility and fitness, warm-up/cool down, safety

·         Tobacco – what’s in tobacco smoke, tobacco and health, who influences you?

 

          In addition to the above, 4th & 5th graders will be introduced to the specifics of the National Health Education Standards.  A list of the Standards is included below and more information is available on Miss Richards’ web site. 

 

Assessment

Students in Grades 1-4 will be assessed using the following categories:   Beginning (1), Developing (2), Meeting (3) or, Exceeds (4) expectations.

 

Assessment

Students in the 5th grade will be graded in the following categories:

·         Projects & Presentations (100 points)

·         In-class Activities and Assignments (25-50 points)

·         Posters & Paragraphs (50 points)

·         Homework (20-25 points)

·         Group Activity Work (10-20 points)

 

Expectations

It is expected that students will come to class prepared to learn and actively participate.  The student's willingness to respect, listen, and work cooperatively with their classmates is also expected.

Core Concepts (CC)
Standard 1 – Students will comprehend concepts related to health promotion and disease prevention to enhance health.

Analyzing Influences (INF)
Standard 2 – Students will analyze the influence of family, peers, culture, media, technology, and other factors on health behaviors.

Accessing Information (AI)
Standard 3 – Students will demonstrate the ability to access valid health information and products and services to enhance health.

Interpersonal Communication (IC)
Standard 4 – Students will demonstrate the ability to use interpersonal communication skills to enhance health and avoid or reduce health risks.

Decision Making (DM)
Standard 5 – Students will demonstrate the ability to use decision-making skills to enhance health.

Goal Setting (GS)
Standard 6 – Students will demonstrate the ability to use goal-setting skills to enhance health.

Self-Management (SM)
Standard 7 – Students will demonstrate the ability to practice health-enhancing behaviors and avoid or reduce health risks.

Advocacy (AV)
Standard 8 – Students will demonstrate the ability to advocate for personal, family, and community health.
