Students in grade 5 have physical education twice in the 6 day cycle. Students need to wear clothing conducive to vigorous activity. Students should have a short sleeve shirt under warmer clothing so outer clothing can be removed as student gets hot from activity. Students need to have athletic sneakers. Boots, clogs, sandals and slippers are not appropriate for PE class. All students must secure hair for safety reasons. PE curriculum for grade five continues with sport skill development, lead up sport games and sport game rules. Health and fitness information is embedded in the curriculum and students strive to improve personal scores on the President's Challenge Fitness Test. Aerobic fun games are interspersed between units and on days affected by bad weather. Students receive a grade for each unit. This performance grade factors in several areas including student personal improvement, student skill level as compared to grade level expectations, rule understanding as demonstrated by student play and self officiating and personal effort to improve skills. Students in grade 5 are graded with letter grades on the trimester report cards. Students who are ill or injured and need to sit out of PE class should bring a note from home to be excused. Students with a medical condition needing to sit out of PE for more than a week need a written medical excuse from a doctor. Students who visit the emergency room for an injury and are told to restrict activity by the physician should please ask for the restrictions to be written. Physicians are familiar with school requirements and many will do this without being asked. Parents with any questions or concerns should contact me via email at kcavaioli@comcast.net or leave a message with the office staff with contact information.
