Parent Volunteers... I was hoping to have all volunteers start Monday, October 5, 2009. If you are interested in helping in the classroom and/or computer lab please let me know and I will put you on the schedule. I will do my best to accommodate everyone.
Guided Reading... This week we will be reading about the importance of friendship and cooperation. We will be focusing on the setting and characters in the story. This week we will also start our first book clubs. The theme that we are all reading about is apples.
Writing... We have continued to review nouns and brainstormed all the people, places and things that we did this summer. With this list we are writing about our summer adventures and then we will illustrate our mini books. We hope to begin the illustrating process this week. We have also started a class Homophones List! See how many your family can come up with.
Poetry... This week we will continue working on two different types of poetry. The first, an acrostic poem and the second a haiku. They will both have the theme of apples. |
Science... This week each student will be paired with someone and asked to fill out a “Read to find out…” for information from the non-fiction title, Apples by Gail Gibbons. It will be a lot of fun! Ask your child who their partner was at the end of the week.
Everyday Math... Our first unit has been covering topics such as skip counting, addition facts, time and money. Please practice these things with your child. A little practice goes a long way! We will also be playing an exciting game called “Broken Calulator”. Ask your child to tell you all about it.
Social Studies... For the month of September we will be focusing on self-awareness, conflict resolution and communities around us. For the next couple of weeks we will be working on individual community maps. The students will be adding their own street names and buildings. We will also be adding a map key and a compass rose.
Show and Share... Each student has been assigned a day of the week that they can bring something in to share with the class. The class will ask questions so be prepared. It's a good idea to practice the night before. If your child can answer who, what, where, when, why and how? They're all set and ready to go! They may skip a week but not two in a row.
