These are additional activities that you might try if you have finished all of your homework and want to extend yourself at home. Give one a try!
Reading and Writing
v Who is your hero? Write a letter to that person telling them why they are your hero?
v What happened the day you were born? Go to the library to do research on the day you were born. Write down important events that occurred.
v Write about your favorite character. What would it be like if you were that character?
v Write a book review. Include a summary, the strengths and weakness, and your recommendation.
v Design a bookmark for your favorite part of a story
v Design a new cover for a book you enjoyed reading
v Write me a letter telling me why you liked the book or character.
v Do a book report on your favorite book. Create a story map (beginning, middle, & ending)
v Do an author study. Read several books by the same author. Are the characters or plots similar?
v Research an animal that you want to learn more about. Find a way to present your information to the class.
v Choose 5-10 words from a book to look up in the dictionary. Write down the definitions to bring to school and share.
v Write a new ending to a book. How would it change?
v Research a state or a country you want. Learn some fun new facts!
v Write a friendly letter (date, greeting, body, closing) to the author of your book, telling them how much you liked it.
v Write a paragraph describing your best friend. Go back and use colorful adjectives.
v Write a list of words that tell about your pet or a pet you want to have.
v Write a paragraph about one good thing that has happened to you.
v What makes you smile? Make a list of all the things that makes you smile.
Math
v Teach your parents a game from Everyday Math: Addition Top-It, Name That Number, Coin Top-It, Beat the Calculator, The Digit Game, Three Addends, Hit the Target.
v Write down all the coin combinations you can make with $.25. How about $.50
v Teach your parents how to use the Partial-Sum algorithm when adding two digit numbers.
v Teach your parents the Trade-First algorithm
v Go on a geometry hunt. Classify (make a list) all of the items you find around the house that are 3-D (ex. Cone, cylinder).
v Use a grocery ad to do some shopping. Plan a day of food (breakfast, lunch, & dinner). Write out what you would buy and then add it up on a calculator. How much did you spend?
v Create a bar graph keeping track of how many pages you read each night for 2 weeks. (How about a month?)
v Measure five things in your house? What kind of measuring tool will you use (ruler, yard stick, measuring tape)?
Other
v Teach your parents a few words in French
v Make a schedule of your day. What time do you get up? When do you go to bed? What time do you eat dinner?
v Write a two-page biography of someone in your family. Prepare a list of questions and interview that person. Use your answers to write their biography.
v Write a two-page autobiography of your life up until this time. Include special people and events that are important to you.
v Make word search with 15 new words that you have learned. Now try to make a crossword puzzle using clues.
v Make a map of your room, neighborhood, or town. What did you include on your map?
