Dear families,

In kindergarten music class, we often highlight and explore the seasons with music, stories and movement. Spring brings songs and games about tiny tree frogs, budding trees, and various furry forest friends!

“Coqui” is a favorite folksong from Puerto Rico about a tree frog that sings from his hiding place in the trees. We’ve been having fun with the steady beat as we frog-hop and play the large gathering drums and maracas to accompany our singing.

"Starlight, Starbright" is a familiar lullaby that we use as the basis for a soundscape of the forest at sunset. The birds are chirping, the frogs are calling, we hear a few light raindrops, and maybe even a distant roll of thunder. What imaginative fun! The artistry of the class working together to create the sound of a forest is tremendous. This early ensemble experience develops valuable active listening skills and encourages wonderful musical growth.

“Music is an essential part of everything we do. Like puppetry, music has an abstract quality which speaks to a worldwide audience in a wonderful way that nourishes the soul."
