Introduction

Congratulations!  Your class has won the the “Field Trip of a Lifetime”
contest sponsored by the Massachusetts Department of Education.  The field
trip can be to any one of the fifty states.  Cost is not an issue, but the
trip must have clear and obvious educational value.  You need to convince
Mr. Cabral, the principal, and Mr. Blake, the assistant principal that
Alaska is the place to go.  You will invite both of them to an “Iditarod”
fair to be held in Rm. 122 at the end of the 2005 Iditarod race in March.
You and your classmates will present a display representing your
participation in the Iditarod unit.  Your display will include one of
five choices for a summative assessment project.  Your display will also
include a variety of different products such as a “musher’s” journal,
handmade artifacts, arctic animal fact cards, a certificate of participation
in an Iditarod webquest, and various graphs and charts containing actual
race data and statistics.  During the unit, you will become an “expert” on
the Iditarod and should be prepared to answer questions asked by people who
come to the “Iditarod” fair.
