This year, some of the questions we'll be exploring include: What is stuff made of? How does
"stuff" combine to make new and useful substances? Where do things go when they seem to
disappear? What is energy and how does it change forms? How do you predict how objects
will move? How is data analyzed and graphed? Scientists question everything - they're real
skeptics!
You will have many opportunities to investigate these and other questions in labs such as:
Oobleck - solid or liquid?, roller coaster physics, and the 2nd Annual Whodunnit?, a crime
scene investigation. Past projects have included constructing a model of an atom, exploring
alternate energy resources, as well as creative writing assignments. In addition, we will use the
computer lab to go on webquests, enter data into Excel spreadsheet software to generate
graphs, and to work on reports and projects.
To accomplish all this, we will build a community of learners by trusting, communicating, and
sharing goals. Cooperative learning empowers you to reach high achievement. We'll also work on
study and organizational skills, different ways to take notes, and learning strategies.
We have a full plate this year. Just remember to do your best, respect one another and others'
property, be kind and patient to all, and reach for the stars. We can do this together!
GMHS in partnership with families and the community, is dedicated to fostering academic
excellence, civic responsibility, and social awareness. We strive to provide students with a
strong foundation of knowledge and skills; to initiate a lifelong quest for learning; to maximize
individual potential; and to produce ethical, involved citizens who respect themselves and others
and work for the betterment of humankind.
