Class News

BRIEF OVERVIEW-GRADE 4 CURRICULUM

Writing Workshop
Process writing skills and standard English usage will be developed during 
Writing Workshop. English grammar skills, sentence structure, paragraph, and 
multi-paragraph writing will be emphasized. Students will learn to develop 
topic sentences, details, and conclusions. Narrative, informative, and 
expressive types of writing will be introduced. 
  
Reading Workshop
Reading comprehension will be developed using Reading Workshop focus 
lessons, mini lessons, strategy groups, guided reading groups, student 
independent reading time, and student/teacher conferences. Word study and 
vocabulary development will be part of Reading Workshop lessons. Please 
encourage your child to read at home. Daily practice is essential to the 
development of good reading skills and habits.

Math
Addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division facts need to be 
mastered this year. Refer to the your child's STUDENT REFERENCE BOOK for 
skills and concepts to be presented this year. 
 
Social Studies
During the school year, grade 4 will study the USA Regions, Canada, Mexico, 
and Central America. Map skills and study skills will be developed. 

Science
Students will be introduced to Life Science, Earth Science, and Physical 
Science. Experiments and hands-on activities will accompany each unit of 
study.

Computer Programs
Internet sites will be used to reinforce information and basic skills 
presented in class. Students will use the SmartBoard, classroom computers, 
and individual laptops to practice and achieve mastery of skills.

Scholastic Book Club
We will be using the order forms from Scholastic Books, Inc. When ordering 
books, make a check out to The Scholastic Book Club. Cash will NOT be 
accepted. Thank you.
