What should I do if my child is absent?

Please call the Great Oak School office, 978-774-2533, to let us know if your
child will not be in school. If you do not call us, we will call you at home
or work. This is a safety issue and we ask that you make every effort to call
us before the start of the school day. The first day your child comes back to
school, please send in a note.

Should I send a snack everyday?

Yes! We will have a time for the students to eat a HEALTHY snack
everyday. Please make sure the snack is in a separate container from your
child's lunch- this eliminates confusion as to what your child should eat for
snack and what he/she should have for lunch.

Is there make-up work when my child is absent?

If a student is absent, you may request that make up work be sent home. If
you know in advance that your child will not be at school, please send in a
note and I can send the make-up work home with your child to complete while
he/she is not in school. An
alternative is to have your child write a journal entry for each day he/she
misses of school and to read with or to your child for 30 minutes.

Will the students have a nap time during full day kindergarten?

We will have a rest or quiet time everyday in the
afternoon. This will be a time for the students to read or rest quietly to
prepare for our afternoon activities.
For our rest time, please send a towel in a reusable cloth shopping bag. The
rest bag will go home every Friday and should return to school on Monday morning.

If you would like specific guidelines or requirements please visit
http://www.doe.mass.edu/frameworks/current.html to review the
kindergarten frameworks. This year we will be using FOSS science
program (focusing on Trees, Paper and Wood, and Animals
Two by Two), Treasures Literacy program, Zaner-Bloser handwriting,
Investigations mathematics and we will integrate social studies with our
literacy and themes. We will review all of the curriculum at our September
Open House.

How can I be involved with my child's kindergarten experience?

At our open house night I will ask for parent volunteers~ weekly, bi-weekly,
or monthly volunteers are welcome! We will also have special days on which we
will need extra volunteers (field trips, Dragon Day, etc.).
There will also be weekly homework~ this is an opportunity for parents to see
what children are learning and a chance to emphasize the importance of
learning at home!
Scholastic also has a great article:

Can my child bring in toys from home?

Children will be asked to bring in items from home on special days (star of
the week, teddy bear day, 100th day, etc.) and a notice will be sent home in
advance to inform parents. Otherwise, please keep toys and books at home as
they tend to get lost or become distractions during the school day. We have
many toys and books in the classroom for the children to enjoy.

How does my child order a school lunch?

Every morning lunch orders will be taken for the day. Students may pay by the
day or the week. It is very important for your child's lunch money to be in a
labeled envelope or zip top bag, and placed in his/her communication folder.
