Parent Involvement

GREEN MEADOW SCHOOL Title 1/STAR PROGRAM PARENT INVOLVEMENT POLICY

The home-school connection is critical to the success of students. The Green
Meadow School Title 1/STAR program, in compliance with the No Child Left
Behind Act of 2001, is committed to the following aspects of parental
involvement:

1. To involve parents in the development and spring evaluation of this
Parent Involvement Policy.

2. To involve parents in the joint development of the annual Title 1 grant
application and the process of school review and improvement.

3. To conduct, with parental involvement, an annual evaluation of the
content and effectiveness of the parental involvement policy in improving
the academic quality of Green Meadow School.

4. Parents will be encouraged to participate in the activities of Green
Meadow’s Title 1/STAR program. In the past these activities have included
such events as:
    Opening Meetings in the fall,
    Pizza and Storyteller evenings,
Workshops that will give parents strategies for helping their children
    in reading and writing
    Bingo for Books evenings
    Family Game Night
    Read Aloud Week
    Share A Poem Week.

We encourage frequent communications through notes, e-mail and phone calls
for any immediate concerns or questions. In the fall you will be contacted
by your child’s Title 1/ STAR teacher. At that time you will be informed of
your child’s Individual Student Support Plan, which is written specifically
for your child, and you will be invited to the Title 1/STAR Fall Parent
Information Night. During the school year you will receive our STAR
Newsletter and, in addition, we hope to continue our Title 1/STAR website.

Parents will receive information on their child's progress through the
classroom teacher. Parents are always invited to come into Title 1/STAR
classes, as well as, for informal conferences.

Parents Right-To-Know:
Parents have the right to know the professional qualifications of their
children’s classroom teachers. The district will provide this information
upon request.

HOME-SCHOOL COMPACT

Before a student enters the Title 1/STAR program their parent receives a
copy of the Title 1/STAR Home-School Compact. This is signed by the Title
1/STAR teacher, signed by the parent and returned to the Title 1 program to
be kept on file. In the compact the Title 1/STAR teacher agrees to make
every effort to help your child grow in self-confidence and become an
independent learner.
In cooperation with your child and his/her classroom teacher, the Title
1/STAR teacher will provide support and strategies in the areas of oral
language, comprehension, phonics, word study and writing and/or basic math
skills. The goal of the Title 1/STAR program is to improve your child’s
academic achievement in order to achieve the state’s high standards.

Once your student has been recommended for the Title 1/STAR program the
Title 1/STAR teacher will provide you with your child’s Individual Student
Support Plan, detailing the assessments given and the goals and
instructional strategies necessary to attain these goals. The success of the
Title 1/STAR program depends on the active involvement of four key people -
the classroom teacher, the Title 1/STAR teacher, the parent and the student.
In order for the program to be successful each one of these people must take
an active role in the student's education. The Individual Student Support
Plan (ISSP) is signed by the classroom teacher, the Title 1/STAR teacher,
the parent and the student. Two copies of the ISSP are sent home before the
student enters the program. One copy is to be signed by the parent and
student and returned to school where it is kept on file in the Title 1/STAR
room. The second copy is to be kept at home to be referred to during the
course of the year as a reminder of the goals set for the student. Both the
Home-School Compact and the Individual Student Support Plan must be signed
by the parent/guardian and returned to school before the child can enrolled
in the Title 1/STAR program.

Parents will also be provided with progress reports and communications as
needed to update you on your child’s progress in the Title 1/STAR program.
You will be invited to attend Title 1/STAR activities that focus on family
literacy and/or math and ways you can help your child at home.

By signing the compact the parent/guardian agrees that they understand the
importance of a strong home-school connection and cooperation for the
success of their child in school. Parents agree to listen to and help their
child in areas in which he/she may need support. Parents are expected to try
to reinforce and support their child’s progress in reading by reading to and
with their child and in math by reinforcing basic math skills. Parents are
asked to monitor attendance, homework completion, video gaming and
television watching. To the best of their ability, parents will participate
in decisions relating to the education of the child.

Parents are asked to try to attend family events and conferences that will
offer strategies and ideas for helping their child.

In the spring, parents will receive a Title 1/STAR Parent Survey. This gives
parents the opportunity to provide feedback to the Title 1/STAR teachers on
the various aspects of the program, events and workshops that were held and
to give useful information as to ways the program might be improved.
