Reading:
First grade has started Reading Street. We use the term "walk to read". Some
children will walk to another classroom where their small group reading
instruction will take palce. Groups last about 30 minutes and whole class
reading instruction begins upon the return of all the kids.
phonics skills: the sound of short a, ck as a final sound
This week we are learning about the characters in a story.
Reading material from reading groups will be going home. Please use these
readers to begin a home library for your child.
American symbols will be our next social studies topic. We will be learning
about the American flag, the white house, the statue of liberty and the
Washington Monument. If anyone has photographs of any American symbol we
would enjoy viewing a photocopied version. I would not want to damage an
original.
We continue to work on adding details to our writing to entertain the reader.
We are able to evaluate a piece of writing and determine if in deed it is
finished. For example... 'I went to my friend"s house." First graders are
realizing the reader wants to know...who is the friend? and what did you do?
Using a number line to solve addition problems. We discovered the order of
numbers does not matter you still end up withthe same answer. However, it is
best to start with the largest number.
