A PEEK AT THE WEEK
During this 4 day school week, the children will be introduced to their
9th Reading Street story, "Animal Babies in Grasslands". Skills, concepts,
and literacy activities relevant to this story will include: 1)connecting the
sound of /p/ to Pp; 2)a week long discussion of AMAZING WORDS: calf, cub,
joey, grassland, pup, foal; 3)blending sounds and introduction of sight
words; we, like, my; and 4)identifying the "Main Idea" of a story. Journal
writing activities for the week will focus on the naming and illustrating of
a favorite grassland baby, along with drawing a picture and writing a 3-4
word sentence describing something each child likes to do with their
families. Homework assignments for the week may be found by reviewing the
Calendar section of this newsletter or the Calendar Link of my webpage.
Please refer to accordingly.
In math this week, the children will be introduced to the pan balance as
a tool for comparing the wieghts of objects; play a "Domino Concentration
Game" in order to gain practice with matching dot arrangements to written
numbers; develop a better understanding of number relationships when using a
number line to play "Monster Squeeze"; and use interlocking cubes or other
non-standard measurement devices to measure the lengths of a variety of
classroom objects. In addition, the children will continue work on numeral
writing (#'s 0-9) as they complete individually illustrated pages of their
number writing booklets. Optional home/link math activities will again be
included in this week's "Kindergarten Homework" envelopes.
VETERAN"S DAY
Just a reminder that Wednesday, November 11th, is Veteran's Day and
there will be NO SCHOOL on this day.
MORNING VOLUNTEER
Please add the name of Mrs. Janet Medina to the list of returning parent
volunteers for Room 20. Mrs. Medina's son Andrew, was a member of my
Kindergarten class last year so she is familiar with the Kindergarten
curriculum and has graciously offered to help on Thursday mornings with math
activities. The macaroni necklaces that your children arrived home with last
week were the result of Mrs. Medina's careful instruction. I am lucky to
have her help in my classroom once again this year.
SCHOLASTIC BOOK CLUBS
On Monday, November 9th, your children should have arrived home with a
new Scholastic Book Clubs order form for November. If you are interested in
ordering anything from this catalogue, please send completed order form along
with a personal check or money order to school by Friday, November 20th.
Since Scholastic will not accept cash sent through the mail I ask that you
always remember to make checks payable to Scholastic Book Clubs. Thank you
as always for you attention to this request.
'Til Next Week,
Mrs. Manchester
