                            A PEEK AT THE WEEK
Welcome to my first newsletter of 2010! This week the children will be
introduced to their 14th Reading Street story, "Little Quack". Related
literacy activities for this newest text will include: 1)recognizing the plot
of a story; 2)connecting the sound of /r/ to letter Rr; 3)review of all 16
high frequency words introduced thus far; and 4)on-going discussion of AMAZING
WORDS (duckling, pond, paddle, plunged, proud, and brave) as they relate to
story. On Monday (Jan. 4th) your child will arrive home once again with their
"Kindergarten Homework" envelope containing: a "Family Times" booklet for
"Little Quack", a Reading Street practice page, an optional math "Home Link"
enrichment page, and Decodable Reader #13: ""Nat!". Please return all
completed assignments to school by Friday, January 8th.
In math this week, the children will review geometric shapes using rope
and cooperative movement activities; be introduced to subtraction terminology
and symbols before later using counters to solve "take away" stories; and make
a tracing of their shoe print in order to determine length using non-standard
units of measurement(i.e. links, cubes and craft sticks). As the week
continues the children will also review sorting by more than 3 attributes; and
create addition math stories on paper with sums up to 10, for whole class sharing.

                              EARLY RELEASE
Please note that Thursday, January 28th will be an Early Release Day with
dismissal scheduled for 12:20 PM. Your children will be having an early snack
(9:00 AM) and lunch (10:50 AM) on this day. Please plan accordingly.

                                                          'Til Next Week,
                                                          Mrs. Manchester
