HELPFUL REMINDERS
Regardless of the weather, all children must wear sneakers to Gym Class on
Monday afternoons. If your child wears boots to school, make sure that they
bring in a pair of sneakers for changing. Work boots do not qualify as
sneakers.
Please pack a snack and drink for your child to have at morning snacktime
each day. To avoid confusion with lunch food, you may want to pack all
snack items in a separate bag. Also, remember to include necessary utencil
(spoons, forks) for eating pudding, jello, etc, as we do not have a large
supply of these items in the classroom.
Please send all money to school in a sealed envelope, labeled with your
child's name and the purpose of the money. Exact change is preferred as we
do not have extra money in the classroom for making change.
Borrowed Hansen School library books should be returned within a week, on or
before library day (Wednesday afternoons).
On Friday mornings the P.T.O. generously prepares and sells popcorn to Hansen
School students for 25 cents per bag. This typically serves as morning snack
for the students. Because of the amount of popcorn contained in each bag, 1
bag usually suffices for most Kindergarteners. Please send your child to
school on Friday mornings with 1 quarter if "Popcorn Day" interests you. I
collect this money first thing in the morning and exact change is strongly
encouraged as it is difficult to make change in the classroom.

WEEKLY REQUIRED ASSIGNMENTS
Beginning Monday, September 14th, your child will arrive home with a double
sided sheet of weekly homework. On it you will find activities relating to
our Reading Street Unit Stories along with an occasional variety of math
tasks. Please pace your child in accordance with the suggested day's
activities so that they better match the lessons presented each day at
school. All completed homework must be returned (in Kindergarten Homework
Envelope) by Friday of each week unless otherwise noted.
Each Monday your child will be bringing home a paper copy of the decodable
reader selected from the previous week's story. Each text will have been
practiced several times at school prior to it's arrival at home for family
sharing. Please have your Kindergartener read his/her decodable reader
several times during the week to at least 2 family members (remembering to
add their signatures to back cover upon competion of each reading), and
return to school in "Kindergarten Homework Envelope" on Friday mornings of
each week. The children will keep their collection of decodable readers
in "browsing boxes" for on-going "quiet time" reading practice.

OPTIONAL ENRICHMENT ACTIVITES
At the start of each week the children will begin a new Reading Street
story. In order to provide additional at-home enrichment activities relevant
to each story's theme, you will find a "Family Times" booklet in your
child's "Kinergarten Homework Envelope" each week, listing important
vocabulary, phonics pictures, sight words, practice work, etc. These
booklets may be kept at home for on-going review in order to keep families
updated on important story content and skills.
Math home-link worksheets will be sent home occasionally to help
reinforce "Everyday Mathematics" lessons. Since the curriculum for this
program stresses the importance of math in everyday living, you will find
these activities to be an enjoyable home-link to whatever your child has been
practicing in school. Because the completion of these tasks is not required
homework, I suggest that you have fun with them and allow your child to bring
any completed work back to school for whole class sharing if he/she so wishes
to do so. A "treasure chest" sticker of choice will be their reward.
