The Engineering Units used at Miller school come
from the Museum of Science Engineering is Elementary (EiE) project. The
curriculum is designed to foster engineering and technology literacy. In
Engineering class students will learn to use the steps in the Engineering
Design Process, ask, imagine, plan, create, and improve, to
solve a specific problem.
Grade 3: Agricultural Engineers
In third grade students are agricultural
engineers. They are presented with a design challenge to solve a problem for a
plant that is not being pollinated. Using the Engineering Design Process the
students will construct a hand pollinator for the flower. Be sure to ask your
student how they solved the problem.
Grade 4: Industrial Engineers
In fourth grade students are industrial engineers.
They are presented with a design challenge to come up with a way to move
potatoes, in a potato chip factory, from the delivery point to a loading dock.
Using the Engineering Design Process the students will need to make the work
easier, faster, and safer for the workers at the chip factory. Be sure to ask
your student how they solved the problem.
Grade 5: Mechanical Engineers
In fifth grade students are mechanical engineers.
They are presented with a design challenge to catch the wind and use the
energy to power a windmill. Using the Engineering Design Process the students
will need to design the blades that will drive a rotating shaft on a windmill.
Be sure to ask your student how they solved the problem.
