Texas district is a model for 1-to-1 computing
Floydada school district in Texas has had a one-to-one laptop program in place for seven years and has become a model for other districts across the state. The school will hold an open house next week to allow administrators to observe how students learn using the laptops. "The computer is just a tool or device to help [teachers] teach with and the staff development that we've provided along with these projects has helped us increase academically by leaps and bounds," says the district's technology and federal programs director. Are Computers for Every Student a Wise Investment?

It's clear that to be effective, a one to one computer program needs to be supported by a clear mission and vision, goals and objectives, excellent planning, teacher buy-in and professional development, strong administrative leadership, tech support and integration support. Also successful programs have included student participation in all aspects of the stages of implementation from planning committees to the evaluation process.

Successful professional development focuses on helping teachers understand why they need to modify how they teach to make their classrooms more inquiry based and student centered. In other words how to make lessons more engaging and connect with our digital native students.
