Thursday
• Prep for in-class essay the Iliad: The Humanization of Achilleus
The Iliad is comprised of twenty-four books and opens in medias res (the
middle of things). As readers, we are first introduced to Achilleus, who is
at the center of the epic, and here, a major theme is explicitly
stated: “Sing, goddess, the anger of Peleus’ son Achilleus and its
devastation…”(1. 1 – 2). Thus, the Iliad of Homer chronicles the tempestuous
fury of an Achaean hero who lives for nothing but immortality. Yet, as with
most things, Achilleus’ quest is cyclical, and though Homer does not include
the physical death of Achilleus, there is clearly a transformation – as
illustrated in book twenty – four. According to Colombo (above) “the
humanization of Achilles by the events of the war is the main theme of the
Iliad.” Analyze the events (trials) that lead to Achilleus’ transformation;
discuss the nature of his reward as part of the hero’s quest.
