1J Homework Guidelines

Homework is designed to provide practice, reinforcement, and/or application of skills and knowledge
learned in the classroom. Additionally, it promotes individual initiative, personal responsibility, and
self-direction. There are five types of homework: practice, preparation, extension, optional, and
independent reading.

1J students usually receive homework assignments twice a week (sent home Monday and due
Wednesday, sent home Wednesday and due Friday). Each assignment is designed to give the children
an opportunity to show their families what they are learning in school, practice what
they are learning, work with their families on a project, or extend their learning.

In addition to any written homework assignments, it is expected that all elementary students will
read or be read to each night. In 1J a reading log is sent home at the start of each week. Children are
asked to record what book they read and with whom they read it and return the log to school each
day. It is checked in by Mrs. Janiuk and sent home again.
