Homework assignments are now being given Tuesday-Thursday. We are taking the
time to review each day the following standards that we'd like you to
reinforce with your children as well:
1. Do your homework in a comfortable, organized area, where there is a table
top to write on and appropriate tools.(pencil for all writing and math work,
erasers, with colored pencils, crayons and markers for illustrations.)
2. If you have trouble with the directions ask for help.
3. If homework takes more that 20-30 mins. and you have worked hard on it,
stop and bring it in as is.
4. Always go back and check your homework. Make sure first words in sentences
begin with capital letters and that sentences end with periods.
5. Be proud of your work!
6. Be responsible for putting your homework papers in your Homework Folder and
in your back pack every night.
NEWSFLASH: There is a new format for HOME READING LOGS. On Back to School
Night you received a form that we are now replacing. We are sending the new
form home Tuesday. Keep it in your child's Home Folder that you got on Back to
School Night. You or your child should record book titles after they have been
read completely. If it is a series like "Henry and Mudge", just record "HM and
the beginning part of the title that fits on one line only. Your child should
bring the Reading Log in when it is full and get a new one to take home.
Reading should occur every day, Monday-Thursday for 15-20 mins. Some second
graders can read silently independently, but most should be reading some of
their book to an adult out loud every night. It is a good way for parents to
make sure that the book is a "just right book". In addition, we heartily
encourage parents to read out loud to their children from a book that is above
their reading level. Even 5 mins. a day can add up. Children learn a lot of
vocabulary from read alouds and it is an enjoyable way for parents and kids to
spend time together!
