Dear Parents and Guardians;
The following is a brief overview of the expectations, policies and
procedures for Mrs. Osborne's Language Arts class. A detailed contract will
go home with your student. Please review this packet with your student and
sign/date the last page. Your student should keep the rest of the packet in
his/her binder for the remainder of the school year. The required school
supplies are needed no later than ________________ (to be announced).
Thank you for your help and please feel free to contact me with any questions
regarding these policies either by calling the school or by sending me an
email at osbornej@kingphilip.org. Thank you!
Rules, Expectations, and Procedures for Language Arts, Room 303
* Class begins when you enter the classroom. Check the front
screen for the daily Bellwork assignment, and pick up any necessary papers.
Please work efficiently on your Bellwork assignment, as you will generally
have 5-7 minutes to complete it.
* If you need to leave the room, you must raise your hand to ask for
permission. Additionally, you are required to sign in and out of the room.
Please do not ask to use the bathroom unless it is an emergency; take care of
all personal matters in between classes, or during the first few minutes of
class.
* If you are absent, IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to obtain your make-up work.
This year you will be paired up with a homework buddy so that you can find
out what you missed during your absence + get a jump start on your make-up
work (if possible). Each day that you are absent, I will fill out a While-You-
Were-Out sheet and place it in the folder in the back of the room. You have
5 days (from the day you return to school) to make up the work missed during
your absence (HW, class work, quizzes + tests). LONG TERM ASSIGNMENTS SUCH
AS THE READ 24/7, RESEARCH PAPER,and ANY WRITING ASSIGNMENT WHICH WAS
ASSIGNED BEFORE YOUR ABSENCE WILL NOT BE EXTENDED FOR ANY REASON. IT IS
EXPECTED THAT YOU WILL HAVE IT WITH YOU, READY TO HAND IN ON THE DAY YOU
RETURN FROM YOUR ABSENCE. Otherwise, you will not get credit for that
assignment.
THERE ARE NO EXCEPTIONS!
* Remember: If you are absent on the day that a writing assignment or
project is due, you must turn in that assignment ON THE DAY YOU RETURN TO
SCHOOL if you expect to earn credit. Otherwise, you will receive a zero for
that assignment.
*I am available on Tuesday from 2:20-2:50, or by appointment.
* Homework is an important part of your learning and will only be assigned if
it is relevant and beneficial. Homework assignments are graded on a scale of
0-5. You need to bring it to class with you if you expect to earn credit for
doing it.
* Students need to come to class prepared + ready to work! Showing up to
class without the proper materials is a like a carpenter showing up to build
a house without his or her hammer. How much can you really accomplish
without the proper tools?
* There is absolutely no eating or drinking, ESPECIALLY GUM CHEWING, in my
classroom. Students who chew gum during class will be required to write a
5-paragraph essay (gum related topic), due in class the following day.
Failure to write this essay will result in office detention until the essay
has been completed.
* Your comments and thoughts are an important part of the learning process
and you are encouraged to participate and engage in discussion each and
every day.
* Ours is a classroom where all students are accepted and welcomed. Please
show your classmates and myself respect and courtesy, and we will do the
same for you.
* Your writing assignments must be typed in a special format referred to as
MLA format. You will learn this format during the first week of school and
will be expected to type all your papers using this method. If you do not
have a working computer/printer at home, you will need to make the necessary
arrangements at school, or at your local library, to complete your work.
Since King Philip Middle School has many computers and printers, there is no
excuse for not completing a typed assignment. Work will not be accepted late
due to computer/printer malfunctions.
* Portfolios are kept for every student throughout the year. Each time I
return a major(graded) assignment, I will collect it and file the assignment
in your folder. Portfolios are kept in the classroom until the end of the
school year. If at any time, you or your parents wish to see the material
in your portfolio, please let me know and you may sign out the portfolio
for up to three school days.
