Dear Parents of Mandarin II Honors Classes (D & E Blocks):

As I mentioned at the beginning of the school year, we are going to use some

extra curriculum materials to supplement our Mandarin learning. Chinese Breeze is an

innovative graded reader series that allows students to read for pleasure while

developing real fluency, building confidence and increase motivation for Chinese learning.

Please find time order these two booklets from the following website: http://www.cheng-tsui.com/

It comes with the audio CD with readings at both slow and normal speeds. It also selects key vocabulary

and recycles words in different contexts to help students.

We need to have the books in hand before March 25.

They are both Level 1, 300 Word Level books:

Left and Right: The Conjoined Brothers

How Parents Can Help Mandarin Students

(no knowledge of Mandarin required)

•    Encourage/bribe/compel your son or daughter to come and see me.  During the school day, I am free except D, E, F and G blocks. I am also here after school Monday and Tues. till 3pm. Students should be coming to see me if they have a low quiz or exam grade, or if they have trouble with homework. It is not at all unusual for students to need to work with me individually, either occasionally or on a regular basis, due to the fast pace of the class.

•    Ask to see the homework (character sheet and worksheet), quiz book (usually 1 per week).  Exams generally cover one chapter of material.  Help students start studying early (the night before is often too late).

•    Ask to see their Mandarin binder and notebook. The binder should have a homework section, a handout section, and a test section. If your son or daughter has trouble with organization, work with them to come up with a system to retain these handouts.  These handouts and notes are keys to successful learning in this class. Some of the notes will be grammar difference between Chinese and English and some are the rhymes we are learning to practice better pronunciation. If your son or daughter needs help with organization, help them with a system to retain these notes

•    Ask your son or daughter to read their Mandarin homework to you so they can practice their spoken Chinese skills.  There is nothing like teaching someone else to help you learn the material (or realize that you don’t understand it, and need help).

•    Help your son or daughter study vocabulary regularly, either on quia.com,quizlet.com (will provide later) to practice their listening comprehension skills or with flashcards they make on index cards.

•    Useful Resources: http://teacherweb.com/MA/LexingtonHighSchool/JieyingYaoMandarin/apt1.aspx
This site contains daily/weekly homework assignments, brief class agenda, links to important and useful sites (such as Listening Comprehension practice Materials, MDBG on-line Chinese dictionary, etc.)

•    Feel free to e-mail me with any concerns (jyao@sch.ci.lexington.ma.us).  If you want to speak to me, email me and provide me a phone number and tell me when there is a good time to reach you.

Believe me, Chinese language is not that hard to learn, and learning Chinese can be fun and rewarding. All I ask my students to do is to use their imagination, keep their sunshine spirit high, and try their best. Together, we will have a wonderful and exciting journey learning Chinese, which in my opinion, is the most beautiful and useful language.

中文很美,也很有用!!!
