today, please do it at home: 

I am a 10th grader at LHS. Usually I have 5 class periods everyday. Ms. Yao is
my Chinese teacher. I have Chinese class on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and
Friday. If I don't know how to do my Chinese homework, I can ask my Chinese
friend. His name is Wang, Peng. He often helps me prepare for my Chinese
tests. I would take him out for  tea to thank for his help!

Monday: Lesson 1 D2 Dialog two, HW: understand the characters and put up phrases

Tues. Lesson 1 D2, in class, we shared a lot of different countries related to
us (for example, where your parents, or grandparents coming from), how to
tell/guess from their Chinese names, etc. 
      Homework: workbook Reading Comprehension page 20, A, B, C

Thurs. Language lab, listening comprehension and speaking the dialog

Friday: quiz on Lesson 1, D1 & D2 Vocab and basic sentences
        Homework: try to find the countries related to you, their national
flag (if possible, what those symbols mean), or their famous landmarks, and
write simple sentence about that, for example: 我爸爸是法国人, 我妈妈是韩国人, 
Grandma and Grandpa in Chinese are: yeye, nainai (if from father side), 
waigong, waipo (from mother side). 10 sentences each student 
Monday, we will do in-class "interviews" about each other

Week of Oct. 3, 2011 (十月三日)

Quiz on Introduction went very well!!! You have certainly mastered the pinyin
rules, stroke order, most common radicals very well!!!

By now, everybody knows how to say their Chinese names with correct tone! Hooray! 

We started Lesson 1, Greetings 第一课,问好
Homework Oct. 4, 
  -practice on vocab writing, start from correct stroke, one stroke at a   
time/box till complete one character, then only need to write 4 times
(complete ones); keep the packet in a good place, we will come back. 
  -listen to the CD and get familiar to the dialog

Thurs. Oct. 6, we will have half hour language lab time and practice more on
listening comprehension and pronunciation

Week of Sept. 26, 2011 (九月二十六日)

Congratulations all!!! By now, we have completed the very important first step
in learning Chinese!!! 

During the past 4 (四个)weeks, we have learned:

  Brief general information about China:map, language, populations, history 

  Pinyin system for Chinese pronunciation - 6 (六个)simple finals 
                                          - 5 (五个)tone marks (where to put)
                                          - 23 (二十三个)initials 
                            -  compound finals (especially i and u in between)
 
 If you remember how to sing the Pinyin song, you will remember these all!

 The Chinese Writing System
 6 Formations of Chinese characters: pictographs: 人,山, 日,月
                                     self-explanatory : 上, 下
                                     associative compounds: 明,休
                                     pictophonetic (has sound clue):河,饭
                                     mutually explanatory: 老,考
                                     phonetic loan (stolen from others):来,我

Chinese Numbers: 一,二, 三, 四, 五, 六,七, 八, 九, 十


Basic Chinese Radicals:
Although there are more than 40,000 Chinese characters in existence, but,
basically, they are all grouped together according to their common components
known as "radicals". Our book will introduce 40 of them and we have already
learned almost half of them!

Basic Strokes:
Writing Chinese characters is not as hard as you thought! There are only 8
basic strokes (well, some variations):
dot, horizontal, vertical, downward left, downward right,upward
hook (vertical hook, horizontal hook, slanted hook, sleeping hook)
bend (vertical bend, horizontal bend, slanted bend)

Stroke Order:
The strokes in any given characters are always written in the same order!
The stroke order will help you in two ways: first, it is fast and accurate
                                          second, the character look better
(eventually, will help you find the character in a radical-based dictionary)

   1. From left to right (downward left before downward right): 人,川
   2. From top to bottom: 三
   3. Horizontal before vertical: 十
   4. From outside to inside: 月
   5. Middle before two sides: 小
   6. Outside before inside before closing: 日, 国


Today's homework: use the 田字格 the "field" lined paper to write those common
Chinese characters in CORRECT order, fill out the whole page!
