SNEEZING ! May 2012
Dear Room 210 Families,
What a fabulous Camping Trip!!!! Everyone had a great time and learned so much to help support our science curriculum and upcoming MCAS. Smiles and full bellies were abound, as well as excitement and some nervousness conquered. I can't believe we have a little over 6 weeks left of school, however, I also feel very comfortable with the level of learning we were able to accomplish this year. This time of year typically has me feeling STRESSED out but NOT THIS YEAR :) Instead, I find myself creating fun extension activities to help bring our level of understanding about topics up a notch or two. Watch out DIAMOND, here they come, ready to show their stuff !
SCIENCE: For a final test of students understanding they will be creating, in-class, Engineering Projects from the various units covered this year. This will provide an opportunity for students to showcase their knowledge in topics such as simple machines, circuits and weather.
Math: A new focus will be on extension work such as area projects, pan balances and algebra, ratios and probability. With our final weeks we will stay in our homerooms and work through some of these topics to both strengthen prior knowledge and challenge ourselves with higher-level learning. Here we will skipping all over the place so don't be surprised to see work in geometry one night and algebra the next :)
Social Studies: Our final unit will be on Early Colonialism including the events leading up to the Revolutionary War. As a final project, students will be creating a visual filled timeline of all these well-known events that helped our country to become the super power it is today. In turn, this will bring us full circle to our Government Unit we began the school year with.
ELA: 1). Students are once again reading in small book groups, titles they choose to read and are expected to be reading each night and keeping Tracks Of Thinking in order to participate in deep discussions.
2). We have also begun a great poetry unit using a Treasury of African American Poetry and Art, Words With Wings. Once we have shared all the "Elements of Poetry", students will be writing and illustrating their own poetry.
