Summer Letter to Parents

August 2012

Dear Parents,

Welcome to Kindergarten in Fiske School! We hope you and your families are having a wonderful summer. We are very excited about working with you and your children and look forward to a successful year together.

The first few weeks of school are particularly special ones. This is when we have the pleasure of getting to know your children. Children react to beginning the school year in different ways. Some hang back, some jump right in, some cling and some talk and talk and talk. All these reactions...and more...are appropriate. Some children enjoy seeing their new classroom and meeting their teacher before the school year begins. We will be having our Kindergarten Visit on Wednesday, August 22nd from 11:00-12:00 pm. If you’re in town, we’d love to see you and your child

During the first week of school, it is extremely important that we know how to dismiss your child. Please fill out the attached form and return it to school on or before Friday, August 24th. Thank you very much!

In addition, we would greatly appreciate it if you would send the following items in a bag labeled with your child’s name. You may bring it in on the August visiting day or bring it in during the first day of school, August 28th:

1.      A complete change of clothing (long pants, shirt, socks, underwear) in a labeled ziplock bag, to be left at school

2.     Two recent photos of your child only (4”x6”)

3.     A roomy schoolbag/backpack that s/he can open easily, labeled with your child’s name. We have found that many children have difficulty manipulating the toggle closures on some schoolbags. Please be sure that the backpack is large enough to hold a standard pocket folder and lunch box.

4.     A snack and a drink: you’ll need to provide a snack every day. We do not allow children to share snacks because of food allergies.

*You will receive information regarding lunch prior to the start of school.

5.     Something special your child would like to share (i.e. a summer memento, a favorite toy, something s/he has made, something from a collection). Sometimes children are uncomfortable sharing in front of a new group on the first day. Whatever works for your child is fine, whether that means bringing something in but not talking about it, waiting a few days or more to share or not sharing at all. Our hope for your child in the first few days is that he/she sees his/her Kindergarten as a welcoming and comfortable place to be.

Just as a reminder, please have your child wear his/her Kindergarten nametag on the first day of school (it is attached to his/her letter).

At this point, we would like to mention that we do not allow children to bring in toys (except for the sharing time on the first day), electronic games or card collections from home. However, we will be sending home information regarding a Sharing/Show and Tell schedule once the school year begins.

Thank you very much!!

On the first day of school, we will send home with your child, a yellow Home/School Folder. This folder is an important means of communication. It is to travel back and forth each day. In it we will send class newsletters and school notices. If you need to get in touch with us, send a note in this folder, call the school office to leave a message (781-541-5001) or send an email (for messages that are not time-sensitive).

Enjoy the last few weeks of summer. We look forward to meeting you and your children!

We welcome your comments, questions and feedback and view the coming year as a team effort with you, your children and your child’s teacher.

Sincerely,
