Welcome!

Congratulations on your decision to play an instrument!

Playing an instrument is very rewarding--the more time and effort
you put into playing your instrument, the more enjoyment you'll get
in return! There are several important things to keep in mind if you
want to succeed on on an instrument:

1. Love your sound.

You're making music! Some of your practice time should be spent
exploring sounds you can make on your instrument. Do you like high
notes or low notes better? Do you like making short quick sounds, or
long beautiful melodies? Can you figure out how to play your favorite
song on your instrument? If you need any help playing sounds and songs
you love, just ask!

2. Listen to professionals.

Just like people learn to speak by listening to those talking around them,
musicians learn to make music by listening to professionals play. Great
musicians from Bach to Bob Dylan listen to A LOT of music in many
different styles. They learned what good music sounds like, then they were
able to make their own music.

Check out "Listening Links" for ideas.

3. "Practice Makes Permanent"

You may have heard the saying "practice makes perfect, " but our goal
isn't to become perfect, our goal is to become musicians! Therefore,
practicing makes instrument playing technique second-nature--like walking
or riding a bike. Time spent playing your instrument is the most important
part of instrumental music success.
