Roots
& Shoots starts on Tuesday, September 29, 2009
Roots & Shoots is an international
organization for young people started by Dr. Jane Goodall in 1991. Currently
there are more than 8,000 groups in nearly 100 countries around the world! The
Littleton Middle School chapter of Roots & Shoots
is in its fifth year, and we are going strong!
The mission of Roots & Shoots is to foster
respect and compassion for all living things, to promote understanding of all
cutures and beliefs and to inspire each individual to take action to make the
world a better place for people, animals and the environment.
In Roots & Shoots, students work together
with their adult leader (Ms. Finnerty) to choose, design and conduct projects
to help people, animals and the environment. Past and current projects include
organizing and running the Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF campaign at LMS, holding
a winter clothing drive for Loaves and Fishes, creating guide brochures for
the conservation land near Russell Street School, assisting the Free to Be
club with their Daffodil Sale for the American Cancer Society, assisting the
school nurse with the Pennies for Patients drive, making holiday treats for
the birds, holding a Great American Bake Sale to fight childhood hunger,
selling t-shirts to save rainforest in the Great Rift Valley, and designing
and building a butterfly garden in front of LMS.
