When are definitions due?

New spelling words are passed out every Monday. During the week, we have 90
minutes of ELA (English Language Arts.) During this time, I meet with each
group for 30 minutes leaving 60 minutes per day of independent work time.
This is the time that children should be working on defintions, assigned PB
(Practice Book) pages, or writing assignments. If they write approximately
4 def's per day they will finish in plenty of time before they are checked
on Monday morning. I have suggested to the children that they MAY bring
home a dictionary at any time to complete one or two def's if they are
running behind. It is crucial that the children copy ALL of the definitions
for each word, excluding the sample sentences and pronunciation, because
knowing that a word has multiple meanings and can be various parts of speech
is a very important skill for MCAS. Although many of you have voiced your
concern that this is a large assignment, please keep in mind that it is a
weekly assignment that they should have plenty of time to finish if they
stay focused. Some children have even finished in two days.
Remember...just like anything in life, "practice makes perfect." Trust me,
this skill will come easy with time.
