October 1st- Update

Hi Parents. We have had a busy first month of school! The students have
settled into all the routines and seem to be back in to the groove of school,
which is good because we have a lot of learning to do! Below is information on
the various curriculum areas and what we will be learning in the coming month.
We had a great field trip to the fire station today, and the students learned
a lot about safety. We will be talking more about fire safety next week. The
students will be asked to talk to you about picking a meeting spot outside of
the house if there is ever an emergency where you need to leave the home.

Reading- Guided reading groups have started and we are working on developing
strategies for decoding and comprehension. All the students seem engaged in
their reading. We will also be working on reading comprehension through read
alouds.

Phonics- We have learned how to make all our letters. If your child is working
at home and makes a letter incorrectly you can ask them to go back and check
their work. They should be able to identify where they made their error. We
are working hard on the "digger" letters, making sure lower case g,j,p,q and y
go below the line. It is normal for first graders to write some letters and
numbers backwards. We will be working on this as the year continues.

Math- We have finished Unit 1: Establishing routines and are into Unit 2:
Everyday Uses of numbers. Soon we will begin Unit 3: Patterns.

Social Studies: We are wrapping up our tall tale unit. During this unit the
students have learned characteristics of many tall tales and done writing
about them. We have also talked about character traits such as kindness,
courage, achievement and honesty. Next week the students will get the chance
to write their own tall tale.

** Center volunteers begin October 13th. There will be a quick training on
October 7th and 8th from 8:10-8:25. You only have to come one morning. Please
let me know if neither of these dates work for you.**

Questions from the specialists: These are questions that you can ask your
students about what they have been learning in the various specials.

Grade 1 (Library)
What happened to Singing Beach Sue in our tall tale Manchester Mike the
Lifeguard?

Grade 1 (Library)
What is the title of the Apple Book you made? What is it about?

Grade 1 (Library)
Is fiction true or not true?
