FAQFrequently asked questions!
What do I do if I cannot figure out my homework? Step #1)Reread the problem so that you know what is being asked. #2)Relax and read over the section that we are working on in your book. #3)Look at you "Algebra 2" Go book. #4) Ask someone in your house. #5) Call someone that is on your list of students in your math class. #6)Ask questions during class the next day. #7) Come for extra help Note: If you have spent too much time on your homework, write me a note explaining the situation. How do I know how to organize my notebook? Every day in class you will see the assignment written on the easel in the front of the room. You will have to know the "color" of your class. Remember to number everything that you are given so that you have every paper in order! If you keep everything in order and always remember to correct any quiz errors, then you should be all set! If a quiz is #45, then the corrections to that quiz should be done on a separate paper and numbered 45 1/2. Yes! Come to room 311 at 2:30 on Wednesdays. Check out the web site to get an idea of what math team is like. Is there extra credit in math class? There are often additional challenges for students to try. If you are worried about your grade come talk to me and come for help. Math Team does offer extra credit to participants. Where do I get a new copy of course expectations? Dear Parents and Students, September 2008 Welcome to your Blue Team eighth grade math class! I am looking forward to working with you and your family this year. Eighth Grade Math Curriculum We will be using our new texts, Mathematics-Math Applications and Concepts- Course 3 by Glencoe in class this year. This material will be supplemented with additional topics that will help prepare students for high school math and for the MCAS that they will take in the spring. Classroom Expectations Students are to come to class on time and prepared with the necessary materials; two sharpened pencils, a correcting pen, math book, notebook, calculator, and completed homework assignment. Each student should be ready to begin working on a problem of the day or a homework problem on the board. Students are expected to participate fully in class. This includes listening, volunteering answers and ideas, asking questions, working at the board or at the computer, and doing class work and other class activities. Notebook The math notebook is a 3-ring binder. It should contain the math book in which we are currently working, class work, homework, handouts, worksheets, quizzes, and tests, in chronological order. Every homework paper should be labeled with the date, assignment, and assignment number in the top right hand corner. Posters on the wall list the assignment by numbers for each class during the first term. This list helps students keep their notebooks complete and in order. All quizzes will be numbered and should be followed with quiz corrections on a separate piece of paper. Assignment Book The Blue Team expects students to use the assignment book provided by the school. Communication between parents and teachers can be facilitated by brief messages written directly in this book. We encourage parents to review assignment books with their student nightly. We request that parents sign the assignment book each night during the first term. Homework Homework will be assigned almost every night. Students should always read the appropriate section before beginning the assignment. All work should be shown in pencil for all homework and class work. A simple list of answers is not acceptable. Quality of homework will be assessed daily. Absences If a student is absent, he/she is to take the responsibility to contact another student in the class for the assignment. All students have a math class buddy with whom they have exchanged phone numbers. Work is to be made up as soon as possible. Extra Help Extra help is available on most days after school. Students should check with the teacher to make sure that help is available on a given day. Students should use after school time to clarify understanding of content, to ask questions, and to make up missed work. Grades Term grades will be based on many types of quizzes, 60%, homework/notebooks, 30%, and class and after school participation, 10%. Please contact me at MVMS at 781-639-3120 ext.3311 or via email at eisenhow@marblehead.com if you have any concerns or questions. I am looking forward to our year together. Sincerely, Kay Eisenhower We have read and understand the math class expectations letter from Ms. Eisenhower. ______________________________________________________________ Student Signature Date ______________________________________________________________ Parent/Guardian Signature Date This year, students will be studying mathematics from the Connected Mathematics Project (CMP) materials. The curriculum materials were field- tested, evaluated, and revised over a six-year period with 45,000 students across the country. Since publication, its use has spread to all fifty states. Student achievement data have been and continue to be collected in sites across the country. Collected data range from state tests to standardized norm-referenced tests. In many instances, comparison groups were tested. The results demonstrate that students are learning at greater levels than prior to the use of CMP. The materials are organized into units, each of which take about 4 to 6 weeks of class time. Each unit is focused around problem situations and helps students to learn an important set of related mathematical ideas and to become skillful at using these ideas to solve problems. The curriculum is structured to help students communicate their strategies and their reasoning so that their mathematical understandings are deepened. The kinds of problems that the student will work on in class, as well as for homework, may be more challenging and interesting than those they have encountered in the past. Practice with ideas and skills are provided throughout the units in the ApplicationsConnectionsExtensions questions assigned for homework. Our main goal is to help more of our students to be successful in mathematics and to encourage them to continue its study as they proceed through middle school and high school. For more information about the CMP program go to http://connectedmath.msu.edu What can I do if I run out of graph paper and CVS is closed? You can print graph paper from this site! http://www.mathematicshelpcentral.com/graph_paper/files/Form4B-BW.pdf or http://www.mathematicshelpcentral.com/graph_paper.htm How do I figure out how I am doing in math? You have a great record of how you are doing by looking at your notebook. You have all quizes and their corrections and all homeworks in chronological order in your notebook. Remember that notebooks are graded and worth 20% of your grade. Participation is also part of your grade! You may go to sheet #0, (see queston #5 above) course expectations, to learn how grades are computed. |
