One goal of Melrose High School in general and of the Social Studies Department in particular is to promote good citizenship in our students.
Good citizenship encompasses many things, including thinking before you speak or act, taking responsibility for your actions, standing up for what you believe, working to correct or improve injustices in your community, and understanding and embracing your role as an individual both in a democratic nation and the larger global society.
Charitable/Community ActivitiesMelrose High School students and the larger Melrose community are involved in a number of charitable activities or other activities designed to spread joy, good will, and civic responsibility. Activities within the high school itself include:- Melrose Veterans Memory Project - This is a newly forming group whose goal is to help preserve and raise awareness of local history, particularly as it relates to local veterans. More information about this group's plans and activities will be available in this space soon. The next meeting of the Melrose Veterans Memory Project will be Tuesday, March 13, after school in my classroom (rm. 138).-DVDs for the Troops - Mr. Santos (HS Social Studies teacher) is collecting DVDs to send to sailors. Bring new, still wrapped DVDs (for security reasons) to the MHS Lobby after school. Students donating DVDs will receive community service credit.- LifeSavers for Life Savers - Girl Scout Troop 71238 (made up of high school students) will be collecting LifeSavers, Skittles, M&Ms and other hard candy to send to our troops overseas. Candy can be left in the collection boxes in the Main Office or in Room 138. ContestsThere are currently no contests available, but keep checking. I will update the site if I become aware of any. You may also want to keep checking the Contests and Scholarships page for additional opportunities that are not tied specifically to good citizenship.* World History students:
