Independent Reading

Description

The Independent Reading Program is a year-long program that will be
presented to the students in the beginning of the school year. They will be
expected to read 1 Independent Reading book per month. The book must
maintain the following criteria:

1. 150 pages or more
2. within the pre-determined genres (realistic fic., non-fiction,
auto/biography , fantasy , sci-fi , historical fiction)
3. A book they have never read
4. Must be approved by the teacher (and sometimes parent)

These are the main criteria, but there are a couple more as well. The
students will receive a hand-out as well as a Reading Log to chart their
progress.

After they finish the book, they must choose an assignment from the IRP
Assignment list. There are 14 choices. Direction sheets can be found in
the classroom library. Each must be completed and presented to the class
before the end of the term (November 1st is the cut-off for the first term).
Students may complete the same assignment (double-up) once.
