Weekly HomeworkHomework for the week of November 9th – November 13th Monday, November 9th Be sure to bring your mystery book (or another IR book) to class every day! Tuesday, November 10th Due today: Veterans’ Day worksheet. You will be typing these poems in the library. Be sure you have used strong, descriptive word choices. Wednesday, November 11th No School! Sleep late and relax! If you are fortunate enough to have a veteran in your life, thank him or her for serving our country! Thursday, November 12th Nothing written is due today. Friday, November 13th 1. Veterans’ Day poem – if not completed on Tuesday 2. Final copy all fantasy assignments – two open responses and one poem (FYI to parents/guardians: If your child has been working productively in class, these should already be completed.) 3. Bring an IR book for conferencing. Homework for the week of November 2nd – November 6th Note: If I have not yet given you back your draft of your dragon story, you will receive it on Monday. Once I hand your copy back, you can make any necessary changes and pass it back in by the end of the week. Monday, November 2nd Be sure to bring your mystery book (or another IR book) to class every day! If you have not yet completed a Fall is… leaf or a “corny couplet,” you must take the necessary supplies home so you can hand these assignments in on Tuesday. Tuesday, November 3rd By today, I should have a completed “Fall is…” leaf and a candy corn “corny couplet” from you. Wednesday, November 4th Spelling Crossword #3 is due today. Be working on your fantasy prompts if you have not yet completed them. Thursday, November 5th The typed drafts of both of your fantasy prompts should be completed by today. (Note: This due date might change, but for those of you who have procrastinated on these responses, be sure you are working on them.) Be sure to follow all manuscript rules for IR (independent reading) prompts. You have this handout in your binder. You must be working on these at home. Do not assume you will have time to complete these assignments in school. Remember, we only have four computers in the classroom. Friday, November 6th This is absolutely the final day that I will accept dragon stories. The only ones who should be passing the story in at this late of a date are those who have been absent or who did not receive the rough draft from me prior to Monday. 1. Spelling test #3 2. Bring an IR book for conferencing. Homework for the week of October 26th – October 30th Note: If I have not yet given you back your draft of your dragon story, I will do so this week. Once I do, you can make any necessary changes and pass it back in by the end of the week. Monday, October 26th Be sure to bring your mystery book (or another IR book) to class every day! Tuesday, October 27th 1. Bring your “Truth about Dragons” notes to class. We will finally have the mini-quiz. Remember, it is nothing for which you need to study! 2. If you want me to check your preposition sentences, I must see them by today. Wednesday, October 28th Half Day of School! Nothing written is due. Work on your haunted house and your spooky sentences. Thursday, October 29th Preposition Haunted House – Be creative and make sure you have followed all directions on the sentence sheet. Friday, October 30th Monstrously Spooky Vocabulary – be sure you defined each word, identified its part of speech, and used each word in a creative sentence that clearly indicates that you understand the meaning. Homework for the week of October 19th – October 23rd **We are in the library on Wednesday. If you want to be able to work on your fantasy assignments or the final copy of your dragon story, both in class and at home, be sure to bring a flash drive and save all documents as “rich text.” Monday, October 19th Those who did not have a draft of their dragon story on Friday should have it for me today… Tuesday, October 20th 1. Fall is…six statements are due. Remember that you need to include figurative language in each one. – rhyme, alliterations, similes, metaphors, personification, etc. (Worksheet is available online.) 2. Handwritten copy of the setting prompt including a quote from the story that describes the setting must be completed for today. Note to parents/guardians: This was an in-class assignment last week. If your child had his/her fantasy book in class and worked productively, it should be already completed. Wednesday, October 21st 1. Spelling crossword #2 is due today. (available online)

3. Typed copy of setting prompt is due at the end of class – We are in the library. Thursday, October 22nd 1. Final copy of dragon story – changed from Oct. 21st. All drafts, organizers, and templates must be turned in with the final copy.
2. Mini-quiz on "The Truth about Dragons" - This is nothing for which you have to study. You can use the notes that you took. Friday, October 23rd 1. Spelling test #2 2. Bring an IR book for conferencing Looking ahead… Your Preposition Haunted House is due next Wednesday. (To be assigned Tuesday, October 20th) Homework for the week of October 13th – October 16th
**Don’t forget that we are in the library on Tuesday and Friday. If you want to be able to work on your dragon story both in class and at home, be sure to bring a flash drive and save all documents as “rich text.” Tuesday, October 13th Bring a flash drive and all your great dragon ideas! Wednesday, October 14th A completed plot diagram outlining the major events in your story is due today, as well as a typed draft of your introductory paragraph. Remember, manuscript rules must be followed on rough drafts, too. This means that you need to use 1.5 spacing, size 12 font, a proper heading, and margins. No “Word Art” or fancy font style is allowed. This copy needs to meet WRSD format rules. After the final copy is completed next week, you can make a second, more creative version with pictures and personal touches. Thursday, October 15th Nothing written is due. Keep working on those dragon stories! Friday, October 16th A typed draft of your complete dragon story is due following all manuscript rules. Be sure you have met the requirements. You must pass in your plot diagram and any previous drafts, too. You have until the end of class Friday to pass this in since we are in the computer lab for the double block. Looking ahead…Spelling test #2 will be October 23rd. You have the list in your binder and it is available on-line. Homework for the week of October 5th – October 9th Monday, October 5th You should be working on your fantasy book. Be sure to bring it to class this week.
Tuesday, October 6th 1. Study for tomorrow’s test. Bring your “study poster” back to class on Wednesday. It will be graded as an in-class assignment.

Wednesday, October 7th There is a test today on “Dragon, Dragon.” A study guide will be available on-line Monday afternoon. In addition, you will be making your own study “poster” in class on Monday. Be sure to return it, as it is an in-class grade! Thursday, October 8th Are you having trouble imagining your dragon, or do you just want to get some serious writing done today? Either way, I will be available after school to help you in any way I can. Just have a parent/guardian send a note saying that you have permission to stay. You will need to get picked up at 3:45. Friday, October 9th No School! Sleep late and then read your fantasy book! Enjoy your extra long weekend. I will see you Tuesday. Homework for the week of September 28th – October 2nd Monday, September 28th Remember to bring your red binder, agenda book, and an independent reading book to class. Tuesday, September 29th Due today: Flash cards for “Dragon, Dragon” vocabulary. In addition, you need a card for the definition of plot. On the plot flash card, include a plot diagram with all five elements labeled. (These words can be found on the study guide page.) Wednesday, September 30th 1. Due today: Fever 1793 Interactive Internet Hunt – See the LINKS Page – If you are not able to complete this at home, be sure to work on it during activity period on Tuesday. 2. “Dragon, Dragon” vocabulary worksheet – Not available on line because we really need to read the story first. Thursday, October 1st Study for tomorrow’s quiz. Friday, October 2nd Very short quiz today on the “Dragon, Dragon” vocabulary – the words are defined on the Study Guide page. There will be a word bank on the quiz, but you will have to define the term plot and label a plot diagram. Homework for the week of September 21st – September 25th Monday, September 21st If you have a Fever 1793 paperback book, please bring it to class this week! Remember to bring your red binder, agenda book, and an independent reading book to class. Tuesday, September 22nd Due today: Summer reading flip book – We have been discussing this for weeks! I have provided class time on several occasions, and the templates have been available in the classroom since last week. There should be no excuses! Bravo to those of you who have already passed it in! J Due today: Crossword puzzle #1 with the spelling words written out four times on the back. Thursday, September 24th Nothing written is due today. Study your spelling words and work on your web quest. Friday, September 25th Due today: 1. Spelling test on list #1 – Remember that the list is in your binder and on my website! 2. Don’t forget that there will be independent reading time today and I will be conferencing with you. You must have an IR book! Fever 1793 web quest is due next Wednesday. (I will explain this assignment on Monday!) Homework for the week of September 14th – September 18th Monday, September 14th Remember to bring your red binder, agenda book, and an independent reading book to class every day! Tuesday, September 15th 1. If you brought your “Life as a Mountview Sixth Grader” letter home for your parents or guardians to read, it must be returned today. 2. If you did not finish the graphic organizer or the hero worksheet in class, you must complete them and hand them in today. They will count as a graded assignment.
Wednesday, September 16th 1. I will be recording the title of the fantasy you will be reading. Be sure you have it in class. 2. A handwritten or typed draft of your hero paragraph is due today. Be sure to include the proper heading and follow the directions! Thursday, September 17th Nothing is “officially” due today. Work on your “Remembering our Heroes” paragraph and your flip book. Friday, September 18th 1. The final draft of your hero assignment is due today. - Be sure to review the direction sheet! You must pass in the direction sheet, the rubric, your hero organizer and worksheet, all drafts, and the final copy that includes “artistic” touches. Looking ahead… Your completed flip book will be due Tuesday, September 22nd. Don’t procrastinate! Spelling test #1 will be Friday, September 25th. The words are available on my website! (I will pass out the list on Tuesday.) Homework for the week of September 8th – September 11th Monday, September 7th Labor Day Tuesday, September 8th Signed supply list AND necessary LA supplies (binder and dividers) are due in class today. Wednesday, September 9th The language arts survey is due today. Follow directions and write in complete sentences. Thursday, September 10th Due today: Handwritten or typed draft of your summer reading flip book. If you like, you can use the link on my “Links” page to create the book. If you choose to do this, I advise saving each section as a Word document and pasting it into the on-line page creator. This way you will have a copy should you need to make any changes, and you won’t have to start from scratch! Create the pages in the following order – Setting, Characters, Plot, Theme, What I Liked Best. Have fun! REMEMBER: This project CAN BE handwritten. Tonight is our Sixth Grade Open House. You will be working on this packet in class as well as at home. Flash cards can be done on index cards (save paper by cutting them in half) or on rectangles cut from any paper. |
