I love Social Studies and I love teaching, so I am happy to welcome you
to Room 314 at Mountview.
The events of September 11, 2001 propelled me out of decades of self-
employment and into education. Like so many others, I suddenly wanted to do
something that served and made a difference in the world. Given my knowledge
of history, my concern for the next generation and my admiration for all
that educators do, teaching history to young people was a natural choice.
I began teaching in Worcester in January 2003, and arrived at Mountview in
August 2004.
I have told students that the reason I know so much history is that
I can remember most of it personally. With plenty of gray hair and a good
memory for trivia, I've had some believers. When not busy thinking about the
people I knew and things I did 1,000 years ago, I enjoy modern visual arts,
learning bits of foreign languages, listening to ancient music (pre-1950),
thinking up homework assignments for my students, and watching them
play baseball, softball and basketball.
In 8th Grade World History we study Medieval civilizations on five
continents—the Americas, Africa, Asia and Europe. But we will not forget
about the civilization that matters most to 8th graders today -- the present-
day world. The point of studying countries and people from the past is to
find what they can teach us about the present, and to look for hints about
the future. We'll connect what we learn about life and events in medieval
times to what happens in our lives as citizens of the U.S. and of the
world today.
