Welcome to a brand new school year! I am so looking forward to working with
your child. It will be such a productive and happy year when we work all
together. If you are new to our room I will mention some important items- if
you are returning then here is a happy review.

My name is Kirsten Day, and if I haven’t met you I look forward to doing
so. We are also blessed to have the following support teachers with us Mrs.
Merhib, Mrs. Hatstat, Mrs. Ortiz, Mrs. Eaton and Mrs. Nunneri. Each
student will also be working with their inclusion teacher, and speech or
Occupational Therapy as required.

Message Folder: We have a system here of message folders with the students
name. everyday we send home their papers and notices in this folder - this
helps teach organization and help keeps the papers neat and easy for you to
find. I thank you for checking this tube everyday as there will be very few
days that papers are not sent home. There will be from time to time dated
materials that need to be returned. We also ask that you send in any notes
in this folder. Students are encouraged to take care of their bags every
morning, but this makes it easy for us to check and make sure we are not
missing an important note.

Daily report cards- We use a general three part reward system for everyone
in the class. Starting the first full week of school.
1.	For each activity during the day each student has a chance to earn a
smiley face, a straight line face or a sad face. They earn their faces for
their behavior. You will see the box on the ‘daily report card’ We use
the corners of each box as visual warning for each individual child. Zero
or one warning they will receive a smiley face. If they have two or three
warnings (for behavior that needs improvement-based on each students
ability), they will get a straight face. If they have four warnings they
will receive a sad face.
2.	At the end of the day they cash in their smiley faces- All smiley
faces they receive a quarter in their ‘bank’. 1 straight or sad face and
they receive a dime for their bank. 2 straight or sad faces and they
receive a nickel for their bank. 3 or more straight or sad faces and they
receive a penny for their bank. Then we clap for every one’s good work!
3.	At the end of two weeks- they can ‘buy’ rewards using the money from
their banks. Prizes are separated into different costs.

It will be most helpful if you review each day with your child how they have
done at school. This system has worked well as a reward for good behavior
short and long term. Additionally this has worked into a daily math routine
and students are eager to learning their coins.

Help Please: I ask each student to please send in two boxes of tissues and
a can of Clorox wipes. With these we can battle germs and work hard to keep
everyone well as the cold and flu season settles in on us. We also recycle
paper in the classroom and need paper bags from the grocery story through
out the year. Thank you. Each month I try to have a scrounge list of
things we could use in our classroom. I thank you in advance for your help.

We will be having one snack during the day including lunch. Please make
sure that you provide for both these times. Thank you.

Please feel free to check my web page, you can find it easily through The
Naquag School web page. On there I will have a listing of what specials on
what day for whom, extra project ideas, words for songs we are working on,
good links as well as descriptions of reading lessons. We are currently
working on updating the phone and web page system, so please understand if
you are not able to reach my right away. I will be available before school
for phone calls, or as arranged during the school day. Also please feel
free to send notes in with concerns or questions at any time in your
students folder. I will get back to you that day or the next day at the very
least. Here’s to a brand new year!
