May 2012: ....These are our focus areas for the month:

Reading: Non-Fiction: We continue our discussion on characteristics of non-
fiction. We are completing a Conventions of Non-Fiction Notebook with 
examples we find during Readers' Workshop. This month we will also discuss 
how we figure out what is the most important part of our reading-(Determining 
Importance.)

Writer's Workshop: We will continue to Write Non-fiction including "How 
To..." Booklets, Recipes, and Step by Step Directions and Instructions 
such as "How to Grow a Plant"  "How to Take care of a Pet" or "How to Play 
Soccer." During WW we will discuss important information vs. details.

Math: We will continue learning about Area and Perimeter,Fractional Parts of 
objects and Shapes, and Fractional Parts of Time and Measurement. 
We will also discuss weight and scales, money using decimal notation, and 
continue explorations in geometry.

Social Studies: We will continue Maps and Immigration, We will read 
biographies of famous people, and make and read timelines.
We will continue to work on our Rutland Books with Mrs. Leith.

Science: We will begin a unit on Plants and Plant Life Cycles. We will be 
planting seeds using the Naquag Greenhouse with assistance from the Rutland 
Agricultural Commission.
We will learn about Earth Day and how to take care of plants and our earth.
