MRS. BOROWIEC'S
HOMEWORK AND DISCIPLINE POLICIES
September 3, 2008
I am sending this information concerning my homework and discipline policies to answer
any questions you may have regarding these areas in my classroom. I would greatly appreciate it
if you would read this material and discuss it with your child.
WHY DO I ASSIGN HOMEWORK?
I believe homework is an important tool in helping students make
the most of their experience in school. Homework helps reinforce what has been taught in class,
prepares students for upcoming lessons, teaches responsibility, stimulates questions, and helps
students develop positive study habits.
WHEN WILL HOMEWORK BE ASSIGNED?
Homework can be assigned any night of the school week; it is not assigned on weekends.
Each night your child will be asked to read for a minimum of 15 minutes at home. Please be
assured that I monitor closely the amount of work given as homework so that your child is not
overwhelmed with the amount of work.
I believe it is the quality of the homework and not the quantity that is important.
WHAT ARE YOUR CHILD'S RESPONSIBILITIES?
I expect students to do their best job on all homework
assignments. I expect homework to be neat and NOT sloppy. If homework is completed in an
unacceptable manner, I will ask the student to redo the work at home in the proper manner for
the next day. Completed worksheets/papers should be placed in a homework folder. The reason for
this is that all assignments will be together and studying for a quiz or test will be easier if
all materials are in one place. All work should be done in pencil. I expect homework to be
finished to the best of the student's ability. I encourage questions after homework is
completed.
WHAT ARE THE TEACHER’S RESPONSIBILITIES?
I will check to see if homework is completed and record completed work in our respective
grade books with a “+”. A missed assignment will earn a “-“. Sometimes homework may be
graded. Your child will be informed that the assignment will be graded at the time the homework
is given out.
WHAT ARE A PARENT'S HOMEWORK RESPONSIBILITIES?
Parents are the keys to making homework a positive experience for their children.
Therefore, I ask that you make homework a top priority at your home.
*Provide necessary supplies and a quiet homework environment. *Set aside a time
everyday when homework should be done. Provide praise and support.
*Don't allow your child to avoid doing homework.
*Contact me if you notice your child has a problem when completing an assignment.
WHAT WILL HAPPEN IF STUDENTS DO NOT COMPLETE THEIR HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTS?
Your child will copy the homework assignments, written on the white board in front of
the classroom, into their agenda book. For the first term of school, I will be checking each
agenda book to ensure that the procedure is completed correctly, and I will initial the homework
for the day. Your responsibility is to check off the complete box in the agenda book and
initial it when your child has completed and shown you the finished work.
After following this procedure for approximately a term, I place the responsibility on
your child. He/she will be responsible for copying assignments and completing them but still
under the watchful eye of the teacher.
If a student chooses not to do his/her homework on a regular basis, I will ask that
parents begin checking and signing homework assignment notebooks once again. I will do the same
in school. I am attempting to develop good work habits that will be part of your child's
educational routine for this year and future years.
After each assignment your child chooses NOT to complete, you will be notified in
writing in the agenda book. The note should be signed and returned to me the following school
day.
WHAT ABOUT LEGITIMATE REASONS FOR NOT COMPLETING A HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT?
If there is a legitimate reason why a student is unable to finish the homework
assignment, please send a note to me on the date the homework was due stating the reason it was
not completed. A parent or guardian must sign the note. Legitimate excuses include illness, a
death in the family, or an emergency. I DO NOT CONSIDER EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES OR TRIPS TO
THE MALL ACCEPTABLE EXCUSES.
MY DISCIPLINE POLICY
Since lifelong success depends in part on self-discipline, I have developed a Classroom
Discipline Plan, which affords every student guidance in making good decisions about his/her
behavior and thus an opportunity to learn in a positive nurturing class environment. Your child
deserves the most positive educational climate possible for his/her growth. I know that
together we will make a difference in this process. The plan below outlines my classroom rules,
possible rewards, and consequences for appropriate and inappropriate behavior.
RULES:
~Follow directions the first time given. Always ask questions if you do not understand the
directions.
~Do not talk or disrupt class when announcements or instructions are being made.
~Listen courteously when others are talking and expect the same from them.
~Always keep your hands, feet, and object to yourself.
~Hang coats and hats, store lunch boxes and school bags in the appropriate place after arrival
in the morning and after recess.
To encourage students to follow class rules, I will support appropriate
behavior with praise, point awards to the class, happy notes/emails home, and positive phone
calls.
However, if a student chooses to break a rule, the following steps will be taken. Please note
that if the infraction is serious, the parent/caregiver will be notified the day of the
occurrence and the consequence may jump immediately to #4 as listed below.
1st consequence =Warning with an explanation of why behavior is
inappropriate
2nd consequence =Short time out, further discussion with the teacher concerning the
unacceptable behavior and an alternative appropriate behavior that could have been used
3rd consequence =Ten minutes of time out and parents may be notified
4th consequence=Parents notified and a meeting is requested to address the issue
Please be assured that my goal is to work with students and parents in a positive and productive
manner. I am available to conference if you feel the need to meet.
Please review both the homework and discipline policies with your child.
Please complete the form below during the first week of school. Please
return only the last page of this packet and keep the polices as a reference.

Thank you for taking the time to read and discuss my policies. Working together we will make
this the best year possible for your child.
I have read and understand the Homework and Discipline polices for Mrs. Borowiec’s Third Grade
