WHAT TO EXPECT

Here is a brief summary of some of the learning that happens in third grade: your child will be
learning how to write in cursive, how to read for purpose and comprehension, how to write
paragraphs, how to compose letters, narratives and stories. Much more emphasis is placed on
grammar and writing mechanics.

Math will include adding and subtracting large numbers, multiplication and division, fractions,
measurement, and much more. The Math MCAS consists of word problems, no rote calculations. Our
math series contains many word problems with each lesson.

Projects and Book Reports will be assigned in English Language Arts, Science and Social
Studies.

A NOTE ABOUT THE CURRICULUM:

Our curriculum is based upon the Billerica Curriculum Benchmarks and Massachusetts Curriculum
Standards.

We participate in the Open Circle Curriculum, a social/emotional skills training curriculum that
facilitates acquisition of the necessary skills for children to work together as a community of
learners, fostering friendship and cooperation.

MCAS

MCAS preparation begins at the end of January. We will be sending home English
Language Arts, Reading Comprehension and Math practice books and assignments.

The English Language Arts/Reading Comprhension MCAS is administered at the end of March,
beginning of April. The Math MCAS is administered in May. Please review the Parent Handbook
for dates.
